Aastha Mahawar on Building Skill Bud: Turning Skills into Scalable Innovation in the AI Era
📝InterviewsAastha Mahawar, Chief Operating Officer of Skill Bud, discusses building a skills-driven tech company, staying ahead in AI and emerging technologies, and fostering inclusive innovation as part of StartupTalky’s International Women’s Day 2026 series.
The global technology industry is evolving at an unprecedented pace, driven by artificial intelligence, automation, and digital transformation. In India, the IT sector is expected to reach $350 billion by 2030, while AI alone could contribute over $500 billion to the economy. At the same time, women’s participation in tech is steadily rising, with more women stepping into leadership, innovation, and entrepreneurship roles.
As part of StartupTalky’s International Women’s Day 2026 series, we speak with Aastha Mahawar, chief operating officer of Skill Bud Innovation Studio, a company working at the intersection of web development, software solutions, digital marketing, and generative AI. In this conversation, she shares insights on building a skills-first company, navigating emerging technologies, and fostering inclusive innovation-driven teams.
Bridging the Gap Between Skills and Real-World Impact
StartupTalky: Skill Bud was founded to drive innovation across web development, software solutions, digital marketing, and AI. What inspired the creation of the company, and how has that vision evolved?
Aastha Mahawar: Skill Bud started with a simple but strong conviction: in today’s world, skills carry more weight than degrees. We observed a major gap where people with impressive academic backgrounds struggled to make a tangible impact. There was a humongous talent pool that could solve real-life complex problems but lacked a collaborative space to convert those ideas into a thriving reality.
That observation was a kick for Skill Bud Innovation Studio. Since its inception, we have been determined to bridge that gap by bringing skilled individuals together to build technology that actually works. We never wanted to just "offer services"; but to sail through the friction points businesses face while building dependable solutions that help them breathe easier and grow faster.
Recently, we have completed our eight-year milestone this February. Looking back, we must say the evolution so far is incredible. What started as a single brand. Now we have blossomed into a family of seven, each solving a very distinctive problem. While we’ve scaled up - moving into generative AI and emerging tech - our "North Star" hasn't shifted: we still keep building high-quality solutions that create real value.
Staying Ahead in the Age of Generative AI and Emerging Tech
StartupTalky: The technology landscape is rapidly changing. How does Skill Bud stay ahead in emerging technologies like generative AI and niche solutions such as AR Magic Cards or Grow My Hospital?
Aastha Mahawar: The tech industry is changing rapidly, and right now, AI is the heartbeat of that change. It’s fundamentally shifting the whole industry - how we create content and build systems. To cater to industry and keep them ahead, we launched Generative Crafts, a dedicated wing of Skill Bud that lives and breathes the generative AI space.
Staying ahead in this industry isn't just about spinning up new departments; it’s about maintaining a genuine sense of curiosity. We encourage our teams to treat emerging tech like a playground—a place to experiment without fear. We aren't interested in chasing trends just because they’re shiny; we start by looking at a real human problem and then work backward to find the technology that fits.
Take AR Magic Cards, for example. That grew out of a desire to make digital interactions feel more tactile and fun. Similarly, Grow My Hospital wasn't just a tech project; it was born from seeing a specific gap in how healthcare is managed. We always aim to solve the human problem first - technology is just the tool we use to fix it.
Building an Inclusive Culture That Drives Innovation
StartupTalky: Inclusion and diversity are part of Skill Bud’s culture. How do you foster a collaborative and empowering environment for all team members, ensuring everyone can contribute to innovation?
Aastha Mahawar: Innovation can’t survive in a vacuum. It needs a "psychologically safe" space where people feel comfortable sticking their necks out to suggest something radical. We’ve worked hard to build a culture where the best idea wins, period, regardless of who it comes from or what their title is.
Diversity is our superpower here. I’m incredibly proud of the women in our company who are driving our most important initiatives. They aren't just "participating"; they are leading everything from deep-tech development to high-stakes project management.
We keep this energy alive by keeping communication lines wide open. When people feel respected and heard, they stop just "doing their jobs" and start contributing to the collective intelligence of the whole company. That’s how innovation happens naturally; it’s organic, not forced.
Encouraging Ownership and Creativity in High-Impact Projects
StartupTalky: Working on live client projects requires balancing technical excellence with creativity. How does Skill Bud encourage team members to take ownership and innovate on high-impact projects?
Aastha Mahawar: There is a delicate balance between technical precision and creative boldness. At Skill Bud, we’ve found that the fastest way to kill innovation is to use a magnifying glass. We make a conscious effort to avoid micromanagement.
Instead, we give our team members true ownership. Whether it’s a small code module or a massive enterprise system, we want them to feel like it belongs to them. When you trust someone with the "why" and the "how," they naturally start looking for ways to sharpen the final product. Responsibility breeds engagement, and engagement is what leads to excellence.
Developing Future Tech Leaders Through Real-World Learning
StartupTalky: Technology leadership is as much about strategy as execution. How do you develop talent within Skill Bud, ensuring professionals are ready to lead initiatives and deliver measurable business outcomes?
Aastha Mahawar: We believe leadership isn’t something you can just study in a textbook; it’s something you forge in the heat of real-world challenges. By putting our team on live projects, they see exactly how a single technical decision ripples out to affect a client’s bottom line.
To back this up, we launched our Leadership Development Programme (LDP). It’s designed to help our people move past just "executing" and start thinking strategically. We want our specialists to evolve into leaders who can guide a project toward a meaningful result. As they grow, we pull them into higher-level strategy sessions, giving them the confidence to step up when the stakes are high.
Turning Complex Problems into Practical Solutions
StartupTalky: Could you share a recent project or innovation that highlights Skill Bud’s impact for clients and demonstrates the team’s problem-solving and creativity?
Aastha Mahawar: We recently partnered with a client who was essentially drowning in disorganized data. Their workflow was so fragmented that daily operations had become slow and incredibly frustrating for their staff.
Instead of handing them a "one-size-fits-all" software package, our team spent time embedded in their actual workflow to see where the gears were grinding. We built a custom CRM from the ground up. The real creativity was in the details—designing a clean, intuitive interface that felt natural to the people using it every day. We didn't just give them a database; we gave them a tool that made their work lives easier. Seeing that immediate shift from chaos to efficiency is exactly why we do this.
The Road Ahead: AI, AR, and Scalable Innovation
StartupTalky: Looking ahead, what are Skill Bud’s priorities for the next 3-5 years in terms of technology innovation, market expansion, and team growth, and what would success look like for the company and its people?
Aastha Mahawar: Over the next few years, we’re doubling down on niche platforms that blend high-level utility with creativity. AR Magic is a huge part of that future. We’re expanding our augmented reality platforms to create more immersive experiences for education, entertainment, and marketing. We want to push the boundaries of what’s possible in that "hybrid" space where the digital and physical worlds meet.
For us, success isn't just a revenue target. It’s about helping more businesses modernize while watching our own team members grow into the next generation of tech leaders. If Skill Bud is a place where people come to build great things and leave as better professionals, we’ve succeeded.
Advice for Women Entering the Tech Industry
StartupTalky: What advice would you give to women aspiring to build a career in technology, particularly in innovation-driven roles and leadership positions?
Aastha Mahawar: The old "boys' club" image of the tech industry is finally cracking. Women now make up a significant portion of the global workforce, and their influence in leadership and problem-solving is only growing.
My biggest piece of advice? Stay curious and stay vocal. Tech changes every few months, so your ability to learn is actually more important than what you knew yesterday. Don’t be afraid to share your perspective; innovation requires different ways of looking at the same problem. With the right environment and a commitment to growth, women have every opportunity to shape the future of this industry. Don't just look for a seat at the table; help us build a better table.
