Apple Awards Rare Bonuses to Retain iPhone Talent Amid OpenAI Recruitment Drive
Apple is taking action in response to the exodus of talent to AI competitors. An unusual set of out-of-cycle bonuses has been paid to the hardware design team by the iPhone maker. This change is a direct reaction to the aggressive hiring practices employed by OpenAI and other artificial intelligence startups developing consumer products of the future. Several hundred thousand dollars in out-of-cycle bonuses were awarded to numerous members of Apple's iPhone product design team.
Apple Thinking Out of the Box to Counter OpenAI
To keep talented employees around for the long haul, Apple has wisely designed a bonus structure. Bonuses were distributed in the form of restricted stock units, which will vest over a period of four years. Employees can only reap the benefits if they stay put at Apple. While the exact amount will be determined by Apple's stock performance, most packages fall within the $200,000 to $400,000 range.
The loss of talented engineers to competitors is a growing issue for Apple's upper management. A new competitor has arisen: OpenAI. They've recruited Jony Ive, who was Apple's head of design, to assist in creating an AI-centric line of goods. Tang Tan, an Apple veteran, is a part of OpenAI's hardware business and was the head of the iPhone product design team that is now collecting bonuses. Several hundred former Apple engineers, including those who worked on the iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, and Vision Pro, have joined Tan's team at OpenAI.
How Fruitful is Apple’s New Strategy?
The generous benefits may not be enough to keep employees from departing to rival companies, even though Apple is offering attractive retention rewards. Workers interpret the salary increases as a direct reaction to the recent surge in startup recruitment. Nevertheless, compared to what OpenAI and other businesses are providing—in certain instances, these companies are offering individual Apple engineers around $1 million in shares each year to leave—the bonuses are quite small.
In 2021, Apple attempted a comparable tactic—providing engineers with $180,000 bonuses—to discourage poaching, a move that was mostly unsuccessful. Apple boosted compensation for its in-house models department last year amid competition for artificial intelligence (AI) specialists. In some instances, Meta was offering jobs for over $100 million. Startups like OpenAI are working on AI device families with the intention of making them the de facto consumer hardware standard, competing with the iPhone.
Smart glasses, updated AirPods, and a pendant with Siri and computer vision cameras are just a few of Apple's AI-driven goods that the tech company is releasing to combat the trend. Apple is worried that it will be unable to keep up with the industry's fast transition to artificial intelligence, and this worry is reflected in the talent competition.
