Namma Yatri Acquires Automicle to Power Europe Expansion
Moving Tech Innovations, the parent company of Namma Yatri, has expanded into the European market through the acquisition of Automicle, a mobility startup based in the Netherlands. No information on the deal's financial details was made public. The acquisition will allow the firm to expand its zero-commission mobility model worldwide, allowing it to build on its open and interoperable strategies for urban transport.
Automicle creates smart parking systems and integrated public transportation platforms; it was founded in 2022 by Amit Pal, Mohit Mishra, and Jef Heyse. Focusing on interoperable, standards-based infrastructure, it collaborates with European city administrations.
Namma Yatri’s Zero Commission Model to Rock Europe
Shan MS and Magizhan of Moving Tech Innovations issued a joint statement stating that the firm has demonstrated the efficacy of zero-commission solutions. Plus, it proves that public transport can be easily integrated, and it also provides that drivers deserve respect and higher wages. The brand is expanding those insights outside India via Automicle. These ideas apply everywhere; they are not specific to any one area. An open, community-led transportation approach is something that cities worldwide are aiming for.
In 2022, Juspay, the Beckn Foundation, and the Auto Rickshaw Drivers' Union (ARDU) brought Namma Yatri to life. It all started in Bengaluru as a platform for car hailing, but it has since spread to other Indian cities like Kolkata, Mysuru, Tumakuru, Delhi, Kochi, and Chennai. Namma Yatri, Yatri Sathi, Bharat Taxi, and Chennai One were all spun out from Juspay in November 2023 to establish Moving Tech Innovations. Investors such as Blume Ventures and Antler contributed $11 million to the mobility startup's Series A round in 2024, bringing the total funding to $15 million.
The Bengaluru-based firm has been expanding its operations over the years. In April 2024, it introduced cab services and then added rental alternatives to compete with companies like Ola and Uber. In addition, it was an early player in India's ride-hailing market by switching to a zero-commission strategy. The business claimed to have managed over 150 million journeys across its Namma Yatri, Yatri Sathi, Bharat Taxi, and Chennai One platforms, allowing drivers to earn over INR 2,500Cr without commissions.
India’s Ride Hailing Industry Becomes a New Battleground
Namma Yatri has made its first foreign acquisition with this investment. Reports surfaced in 2024 that it was considering entering the US market in collaboration with taxi unions. As part of its plan for growth, it had also begun negotiations with various taxi unions in the United States. Though nothing new has transpired on this matter since then. The domestic ride-hailing market is seeing increased competition. Although the unicorn Rapido, which has Prosus' support, appears to be leading the segment by a comfortable margin. But competitor Uber is trying to diversify its products to increase its income.
So, for example, earlier today it was reported in the media that the company has terminated shuttle operations in Delhi NCR. Taking a strong stance on business-to-business employee transportation was the next logical step. Also earlier this month, Uber and AbhiBus, which is owned by ixigo, launched intercity bus-ticketing services in India.
