Amazon AWS UAE impact spreads as data centre reports power failure

The Amazon Web Services Availability Zone (AWS) data centre in the UAE was momentarily rendered powerless following an incident involving objects that struck the facility. While the United States, Israel, and Iran are in the midst of an open conflict, the incident allegedly set off sparks and a fire at the site.

The business has been muted on the question of whether the data centre incident was related to the ongoing war-focused airstrikes. According to AWS, at approximately 4:30 AM PST, items hit the data centre, causing flames and fire in one of our Availability Zones (mec1-az2).

Ongoing Safety Measures at AWS

Firefighters turned off the power to the building as they battled to put out the blaze, according to the most recent report update. Restoring connectivity in the affected zone will take many hours, according to the operator of the data centre. At the same time, all other UAE zones are running as usual. According to the business's website, an "Availability Zone" is made up of multiple linked physical data centres. Within each AWS Region, there is a distinct and autonomous location. The Council on Foreign Relations' senior fellow for China and new technology, Chris McGuire, penned a post on X: “Reuters reports that an object struck an AWS data center in the UAE, causing a fire and shutting it down. Assuming this was an Iranian drone strike, it is the first time a commercial data center was physically targeted in a conflict. It won’t be the last.”

Iran Creating Havoc in Middle East

This revelation arrives while the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is still trying to recover from the devastating effects of Iran's retaliatory strikes. These strikes have devastated numerous landmarks, residential areas, and ports in other Gulf countries. Amazon Web Services' (AWS) data centre in Bahrain also reported power and connectivity troubles, just hours after the UAE facility went down. The exact cause of the outage was not immediately apparent.
