How Big Is Deutsche Bank’s Retail Business in India?

The bank in total has around 17 branches in India. It mainly focuses on the rich and brought in a revenue of INR 2,455 crore in FY 2025 (up by 4%).  The total business size is around INR 27,000 crore rupees. Now the real question is, why is Kotak Mahindra Bank offering only INR 4,500 crore?

Although Deutsche Bank's Indian retail business is worth that much, it has liabilities that need to be subtracted. Therefore, the net value is INR 4,300 crore. Kotak has offered a premium of INR 200 crore. Nonetheless, it’s indeed a good deal for Kotak Mahindra Bank.

Why Does Kotak Want Deutsche Bank’s India Retail Business?

According to Kotak, this is a growth move. It wasn’t the only player bidding. Federal Bank was there too, but couldn’t be the frontrunner. The deal helps Kotak:

  • Increase loans & deposits (more business scale)
  • Grow in MSME lending
  • Strengthen wealth management
  • Gain more rich customers
  • Expand in premium urban markets
