📝InterviewsChristelle D’Cruz talks about co-founding SuperGaming, building games for millions, and driving innovation in India’s booming gaming industry. She shares insights on leadership, diversity, and the growing role of women in game development.
India’s gaming industry is rapidly emerging as a global powerhouse, projected to grow from USD 5.91 billion in 2025 to USD 16.72 billion by 2034 at a 14.6% CAGR. Driven by mobile gaming, India has over 488 million gamers, with nearly 90% on mobile. While 44% of gamers are women, their presence in leadership and development roles is still evolving.
As part of our International Women’s Day special series, we spoke with Christelle D’Cruz, Co-Founder and Engineering Lead at SuperGaming, to understand her journey from developer to entrepreneur, and how she is helping shape a more inclusive and innovative gaming ecosystem.
From Developer to Co-Founder: Building a Vision in Gaming
StartupTalky: Christelle D'Cruz, as a Co-Founder and Engineering Lead at SuperGaming, you are one of the few women in India leading a gaming studio at the highest level. What inspired you to transition from being a developer to co-founding SuperGaming, and how has your journey been as a woman in the male-dominated gaming industry?
Christelle D’cruz: My transition from being a developer to Co-founder was driven by the passion to build something meaningful and impactful. As a developer, I enjoyed bringing games to life. Over time, I felt the desire to take up the bigger role of being able to define the vision, culture and type of games we wanted to create which led me to becoming one of the co-founders at SuperGaming.
Being a woman in the gaming industry, especially in the leadership role, has been both rewarding as well as challenging. When I first joined the industry, there were very few women in game development, design, or leadership roles. The industry, both in workforce and audience, was predominantly male. But I have seen a positive change in the industry over the past few years. My focus will continue to be building great products with a strong diverse team. I also hope to be able to inspire other women to take up roles in game development and leadership.
Why Women Developers Are Key to Inclusive Gaming
StartupTalky: SuperGaming has built popular titles like MaskGun, Silly Royale, and Tower Conquest, reaching millions of players globally. On International Women's Day 2026, what role do you believe women engineers and developers play in creating more diverse and inclusive gaming experiences, and how does SuperGaming foster this?
Christelle D’cruz: Women Engineers and developers bring unique perspectives that help push creative boundaries and bring fresh ideas to game development. Their insights and inputs help foster inclusivity with richer storytelling, more relatable characters and experiences that resonate with a wider audience.
At SuperGaming, we believe that great games are built by diverse teams. We already have incredible women working across animation, 3D art, QA, marketing, and community management. Their valuable feedback and contributions make a difference not just in the games that we build but also help shape the company’s culture. I feel that representation matters and we aim to inspire the next generation of talented women.
Breaking Barriers in India’s Fast-Growing Gaming Market
StartupTalky: India's gaming industry has grown exponentially, with the country now being one of the largest mobile gaming markets globally. As a woman co-founder in this space, what unique challenges have you faced in building and scaling a gaming company, and what advice would you give to women aspiring to enter game development?
Christelle D’cruz: Every role comes with challenges, but if you love what you do, you’ll overcome them. Focus on building your skills, and find a support network of like-minded, driven individuals. Find mentors who can guide and coach you. Be confident, speak out, and showcase your work. An impressive creative portfolio opens doors. Above all, be resilient. In a male-dominated industry, you may feel out of place. Get past those moments. Keep shattering obstacles. Your opinion matters, and the games industry needs more women leaders.
Engineering Innovation and the Power of Diverse Leadership
StartupTalky: SuperGaming has raised over $21 million in funding, reflecting strong investor confidence in your vision. How has your engineering leadership contributed to the company's technical innovation, and do you think women in technical leadership roles bring a different perspective to product development in gaming?
Christelle D’cruz: From an engineering leadership perspective, my focus has and will always continue to be building teams with a strong technical foundation that keeps innovating on gameplay and user experiences. This includes investing time and resources on new technologies that can help speed up development as well as creating an environment where engineers have enough creative freedom to experiment.
I do believe that women in technical leadership can bring valuable and varied perspectives in product development. Having diverse leadership helps question assumptions and think about player motivations from a broader perspective and helps build richer experiences.
Driving Diversity in Teams and Gaming Experiences
StartupTalky: The gaming industry often faces criticism for lack of representation, both in the workforce and in the games themselves. How is SuperGaming addressing diversity in its team and in the gaming experiences it creates, and what changes would you like to see in the industry regarding women's representation?
Christelle D’cruz: SuperGaming believes in having strong representation across different roles in the company. We have many talented women working in areas such as animation, 3D art, QA, marketing, community management, PR, and HR. Their perspectives help push creative boundaries, bring new ideas, and play an important role in helping us build games that appeal to a wider audience.
Hopefully, in the future, I will see an industry where talent and ideas matter more than gender. Greater representation and empowerment of women can help shape a stronger workforce and lead to richer, more inclusive gaming experiences for players around the world.
Balancing Creativity, Technology, and Scale
StartupTalky: Building a gaming studio requires balancing creative vision with technical execution and business sustainability. As a woman leading the engineering function at SuperGaming, how do you approach this balance, and what has been your proudest achievement in the company's journey so far?
Christelle D’cruz: From an engineering perspective, my goal has always been to create a strong technical foundation that allows our games to scale to millions of players. We focus on building scalable systems and tools that enable the team to experiment, innovate, iterate quickly and deliver high quality games. At the same time, we ensure alignment of the product’s roadmap with the company’s vision and business goals.
One of my proudest achievements has been helping build a team that built games that millions of people around the world have played. Seeing something that started out as an idea that got translated into a game enjoyed by a large community is extremely rewarding. I’m also proud of the culture that we’ve built where creativity is nurtured, opinions matter and innovation and continuous improvement are encouraged.
The Future of Women in Gaming and Technology
StartupTalky: As we celebrate International Women's Day 2026, what is your message to young women in India who are interested in game development and technology, and how do you envision the role of women in shaping the future of India's gaming ecosystem over the next decade?
Christelle D’cruz: My message to women interested in game development and technology is - Don’t hesitate to do what you love. Every role will have obstacles. It’s how you approach those obstacles that will help shape your future. Don’t be discouraged by failures. Keep pushing forward.
The future is bright! More institutions are offering courses in game development, providing women with the skills and resources they need to enter the industry. Communities and mentorship networks are growing, giving women the support and guidance that previous generations didn’t have. As more women take up leadership roles in gaming, they will inspire the next generation to follow their passion. We’re also seeing more women competing in esports, leading teams, and proving that gaming isn’t just for one demographic; it’s for everyone.
