Gemini in Google Workspace: Which Plan Gets What
Gemini in Docs, Sheets, Meet and Drive costs exactly four times more than Gemini in Gmail alone. Google's cheapest plan has no Gemini at all. Here is what each tier actually unlocks.
Gemini in Docs, Sheets, Meet and Drive costs exactly four times what Gemini in Gmail costs.
Google Workspace Starter is ₹318.60 per user per month with 18% GST, and the Gemini you get for it works in Gmail and nowhere else. Standard is ₹1,274.40, which is 4.0 times the price, and that is the tier where Gemini reaches the rest of the suite. Base, the cheapest plan at ₹116.82, includes no Gemini at all.
Nobody tells you this clearly, including Google.
Which Workspace Plan Includes Gemini
Google's India pricing page describes AI inclusion in one line per plan. Here is what those lines say, with GST applied.
| Plan | Price with GST | What Google says about Gemini |
|---|---|---|
| Base | ₹116.82 | Not included |
| Starter | ₹318.60 | "Gemini AI assistant in Gmail" |
| Standard | ₹1,274.40 | "Gemini AI assistant in Gmail, Docs, Meet and more" |
| Enterprise | Contact sales | Included with expanded capabilities |
Those are summary lines rather than a feature matrix, so treat them as the boundary rather than the full map. What they establish is the thing that matters for a buying decision: Gmail is the only app where Starter gives you Gemini, and everything else sits behind Standard.
What Gemini Does in Gmail, Which Is All Starter Buys
Within Gmail, Gemini drafts replies and helps compose messages, summarises long threads down to their key points, suggests labels and filters to organise an inbox, and surfaces the mail it judges important while pushing the rest down. There are follow-up reminders so a message you sent does not quietly go unanswered.
If your team's day is mostly email, Starter is genuinely enough. A ten-person team on Starter costs ₹38,232 a year with GST, and the drafting and summarising alone will save more time than that.
What Only Standard Unlocks
Everything below requires Standard or Enterprise. This is the four-times decision.
- Docs. Generating first drafts from a prompt, rewriting existing passages, and AI commenting on work in progress.
- Sheets. Building formulas from a plain-English description, finding patterns in a dataset, and suggesting charts. For anyone who has lost an afternoon to a nested formula, this is the one that pays for itself.
- Slides. Drafting decks from material already in Drive, summarising long inputs, and generating images.
- Meet. Studio-quality audio and video cleanup, translated captions, and a "take notes for me" feature that writes up the meeting and its action items.
- Drive. Search that understands what a file is about rather than matching filenames, plus summaries of long documents and synthesis across several files at once.
- Calendar and Chat. Smarter scheduling across multiple calendars, and summarisation of long chat threads.
Read that list and the pricing stops looking arbitrary. Gmail Gemini helps one person write faster. Everything on Standard touches work that moves between people, which is where the time actually goes.
Is Standard Worth Four Times Starter?
For a ten-person team, Standard costs ₹1,52,928 a year against ₹38,232 on Starter. The gap is ₹1,14,696.
My view is that it depends almost entirely on whether you live in Sheets and Meet. If your team runs on spreadsheets, or sits in four client calls a day that nobody writes up properly, the formula assistance and automatic meeting notes will clear that gap without much argument, because both replace work somebody is currently doing by hand. If your team mostly emails and occasionally writes a document, Starter plus the free Gemini app in a browser tab gets you most of the way for a quarter of the money. What I would not do is buy Standard because the marketing says AI is built in. It is built in from Starter upwards, and the difference between the Gmail-only version and the full one is large. Note also that Standard brings 2 TB of storage per user against Starter's 30 GB, so if you were upgrading for space anyway, the Gemini expansion arrives free. The full tier-by-tier costings sit in our breakdown of Google Workspace pricing in India.
One Warning About Any Guide to This
Google has changed Gemini packaging repeatedly. It folded Gemini into paid Workspace plans in January 2025 and raised prices at the same time, retiring the separate Gemini add-on that had been sold alongside. The tier names changed too, from Business Starter, Standard and Plus to Base, Starter, Standard and Enterprise.
So check Google's current pricing page before you commit, and distrust any comparison, including this one, that does not say when it was checked. The figures here are from October 2026.
If you are weighing Workspace against the alternatives rather than choosing between its tiers, we have priced it against Microsoft 365 and against Zoho Workplace separately.
FAQs
Is Gemini included free in Google Workspace?
It is included in the plan price rather than sold separately, but not on every plan. Base includes no Gemini. Starter includes it in Gmail only. Standard extends it to Gmail, Docs, Meet and more, and Enterprise adds expanded capabilities. Google removed the standalone Gemini add-on in January 2025 and raised plan prices at the same time.
Which Google Workspace plan do I need for Gemini in Docs and Sheets?
Standard or Enterprise. Google's pricing page limits Starter's Gemini to Gmail. Standard costs ₹1,274.40 per user per month with 18% GST against ₹318.60 for Starter, which is exactly four times the price.
How much more does Standard cost than Starter in India?
Four times. Starter is ₹270 and Standard ₹1,080 per user per month before tax, or ₹318.60 and ₹1,274.40 with 18% GST. For a ten-person team that is ₹38,232 against ₹1,52,928 a year, a difference of ₹1,14,696.
Does Google Workspace Base include any AI?
No. Base is the only paid Workspace tier with no Gemini, which makes it a poor choice for anyone buying Workspace for its AI features. It gives 20 GB of pooled storage per person at ₹116.82 with GST.
