UPI Hits Highest-Ever Monthly Volume: 23.66 Billion Transactions in July 2026
India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has recorded its strongest month on record. According to data released by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), the platform processed 23.66 billion transactions worth Rs 29.88 lakh crore in July 2026, its highest-ever monthly volume.
The milestone comes just two months after UPI first crossed the 23 billion mark in May, and confirms that the payment rail's growth is not slowing despite its scale.
UPI Transaction Volume Surpasses Previous Record
The July figure surpassed the previous volume record of 23.20 billion transactions set in May this year. Transaction value, however, remained marginally below the all-time high of Rs 29.90 lakh crore also recorded in May, indicating that the growth in July was driven more by a higher number of transactions than by an increase in average ticket size.
On a daily basis, UPI processed an average of 763 million transactions in July, with average daily transaction value at Rs 96,383 crore.
Month-on-Month and Year-on-Year Growth
| Metric | June 2026 | July 2026 | MoM Change | July 2025 | YoY Change |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Transaction volume | 22.72 billion | 23.66 billion | +4.1% | 19.47 billion | +22% |
| Transaction value | Rs 28.92 lakh crore | Rs 29.88 lakh crore | +3.3% | Rs 25.08 lakh crore | +19% |
| Avg. daily volume | 757 million | 763 million | – | 628 million | – |
| Avg. daily value | Rs 96,405 crore | Rs 96,383 crore | – | Rs 80,919 crore | – |
The gap between volume growth (22 percent) and value growth (19 percent) on an annual basis points to a rise in smaller-value, everyday transactions rather than big-ticket payments.

Growth Driven by Tier-2, Tier-3 and Rural Markets
Industry executives attribute July's numbers to deepening UPI adoption outside metropolitan India. Anand Kumar Bajaj, founder, MD and CEO of PayNearby, said the next phase of expansion is expected to come from smaller cities and rural regions, where UPI is becoming part of routine payment behaviour rather than an occasional choice.
Reeju Datta, co-founder of Cashfree Payments, noted that July became UPI's biggest month on record without the support of a major festival or quarter-end settlement activity, suggesting the growth reflects ordinary consumer behaviour rather than a seasonal spike. Datta also observed that transaction volumes are rising faster than transaction value, which he read as evidence of a shift towards smaller, more frequent payments.
These are views reported by industry participants rather than figures confirmed by NPCI, and should be read as commentary on the trend rather than verified data points.
UPI App Market Share: PhonePe Leads, WhatsApp Overtakes CRED
NPCI is yet to release app-wise transaction data for July. The most recent available breakdown, for June, showed the following standing among UPI apps:
| App | June 2026 Transaction Volume |
|---|---|
| PhonePe | 10.48 billion |
| Google Pay | 2nd position |
| Paytm | 3rd position |
| 150.48 million | |
| CRED | 141.78 million |
PhonePe retained its lead in the UPI ecosystem, followed by Google Pay and Paytm. Notably, WhatsApp overtook CRED in transaction volume during June, a shift worth watching once July's app-level data is published.
UPI's International Expansion Continues
Beyond domestic growth, UPI's footprint abroad continues to widen. The Maldives recently launched a real-time payment corridor with India, adding to the list of markets where UPI merchant payments are now live: Bhutan, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, France, Mauritius, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Qatar, Cambodia and the Maldives.
Greece remains connected for person-to-person transfers, while Singapore and Nepal also support remittance linkages, extending UPI's utility for cross-border transactions involving Indian users.
What the Numbers Suggest for India's Digital Payments
The July data reinforces a pattern that has held through much of 2026: UPI's transaction volume keeps setting new records roughly every few months, even as growth rates moderate slightly from the highs of previous years. Volume growth of 22 percent year-on-year, compared with 35 percent in July 2025, suggests the base effect is beginning to show, though the absolute scale of growth remains substantial for a payments network already processing tens of billions of transactions monthly.
For merchants, fintechs and banks operating in the UPI ecosystem, the continued shift towards smaller-value, high-frequency transactions in non-metro markets is likely to shape product and infrastructure decisions in the months ahead, particularly as the festive season approaches later in the year.
