Adani Defence Secures 5-Year Ammunition Deal for India-Made AK-203 Assault Rifles

Indo-Russian Rifles Pvt Ltd and Adani Defence & Aerospace have inked a five-year deal for the supply of 7.62x39 millimetre ammunition made in India for use in the AK-203 assault rifles. As a result of the deal, the rifle programme between Russia and India will have an integrated domestic supply chain.

As part of the deal, Adani Defence would provide the AK-203 programme with small-calibre ammunition for the next five years. The corporation claims this will ensure a steady supply of ammunition over the duration of the contract and facilitate sourcing from India.

India Building it Indigenous Defence Production

Indo-Russian Rifles Pvt Ltd (IRRPL) and Adani Defence, a manufacturer of ammunition, have joined forces in this deal to produce rifles. Connecting the two AK-203 programme components is an important step in India's expanding defence industrial ecosystem. In 2019, as part of an intergovernmental agreement between Russia and India, IRRPL was founded to produce AK-203 assault rifles for the Indian Armed Forces. Its Korwa factory is in the Amethi district of Uttar Pradesh.

Russian companies' concern Kalashnikov and Rosoboronexport are partners in the joint venture, which also includes Indian companies Advanced Weapons and Equipment India Ltd and Munitions India Ltd. Indo-Russian Rifles Pvt Ltd (IRRPL) is the joint venture that India's Ministry of Defence (MoD) has identified as producing AK-203 assault rifles domestically. The government secured a contract with IRRPL in December 2021 to have 601,427 AK-203 rifles manufactured at their Korwa factory. The company claims that by combining domestically made weapons with ammunition, the most recent agreement increases the domestic production footprint surrounding the programme.

Agreement to Strengthen India’s Domestic Weapon Production

A production plant for small-calibre ammunition has been established in Kanpur, India, by Adani Defence. As a whole, the domestic small-arms supply chain would be strengthened by the deal. In addition, it will lend credibility to the Aatmanirbhar Bharat programme, which aims to increase national independence in the production of defence goods. Localising the India-Russia defence initiative, which was initially set up to produce AK-203 rifles in India, is another objective of the arrangement.

The programme might lessen its reliance on external vendors for critical consumables used with the weapon system by procuring a major demand for ammunition domestically. One variant of the AK-200 rifle that the Indian Army uses is the AK-203 assault rifle, which is chambered for the 7.62x39mm cartridge. The Kalashnikov assault rifle's classic strengths—reliability and low maintenance requirements—are present in this weapon. Produced in India using approved machinery, the AK-203s adhere to Russian patents. The magnitude and purpose of the rifle program are two of its most noteworthy features, which aim to gradually increase the proportion of domestic production. With the new Adani Defence deal, they're taking that same strategy and applying it to their ammunition needs as well.
