Airtel, Jio Raise Unfair Practice Claims Against Vi, Seek TRAI Action
Airtel and Jio have urged the TRAI to direct Vodafone Idea (Vi) to investigate the charges of unfair trade practices and file a report. Telecom rivals also want stronger rules on fraudulent client acquisition practices related to mobile number portability (MNP).
The complaints lodged by Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio against Vodafone Idea regarding alleged violations of mobile number portability (MNP) have commenced examination by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai).
The regulator was informed of the concerns and is currently reviewing the case. An investigation is underway, according to the official. It is required for each concern that is brought to Trai's attention to be investigated. All parties involved will be contacted, offical added further.
Allegations on Vi by Jio and Airtel
Rival telecom companies Airtel and Jio have accused Vodafone Idea of using deceptive tactics to entice users away from them. Such actions, according to the firms, were in violation of Trai's regulations that oversee MNP. Vodafone Idea has denied the claims and insisted it followed all regulations. Next, the telecom operator will argue its case before the authority.
The concerns are about the methods used to acquire customers through MNP, which lets people switch telecommunications providers while keeping their current phone number. Opponent operators have claimed that consumers were approached by imposters pretending to be from competing telecom providers, who advised them of impending rate increases or changes to their current plans.
Additionally, they claim that in certain areas, Vodafone Idea was blocking unique porting codes (UPC) generation requests submitted to 1900 by SMS. Telecom providers are required by MNP rules to promptly give UPCs to consumers who request them in order to facilitate network switching.
Vi Revamping its Business Dynamics
Trai has been asked by Airtel and Jio to order Vodafone Idea to look into the allegations and provide a report. They have also pushed for more stringent regulations to prevent deceptive tactics in MNP-related client acquisition. Vodafone Idea is attempting to fortify its position in the market, which has brought it under regulatory scrutiny. With a planned investment push, the corporation is pursuing network expansion plans, including 5G rollout plans. Even though Vi has a lot of debt, they still want to spend a lot of money on capital expenditures by FY29.
As part of its efforts to win back clients and strengthen its position in the market, the company has moreover begun an intensive advertising campaign. On June 11th, Kumar Mangalam Birla, Vodafone Idea non-executive chairman, tried to assuage investor fears on the revival chances of the telecom company. This means that the firm has successfully navigated a very challenging period. Shareholders authorised an investment of INR 4,730 crore from the Aditya Birla Group through a preferential allocation of warrants at an extraordinary general meeting (EGM), coinciding with Birla's statement. Its turnaround and the faith of its lenders are the goals of the funding. As a result, AB Group's previous 9.6% investment in the telecom operator will grow to around 13%.
