Amazon Plans Major Layoffs Next Week as Part of 30,000 Global Job Cuts
Amazon plans to carry out another round of layoffs next week, with the goal of eliminating some 30,000 jobs from its corporate workforce. The layoffs are expected to be comparable in scope to the employment reductions from the previous year and could begin as early as 27 January. About 14,000 white-collar positions were lost by the corporation in October, accounting for half of the total layoffs first reported by Reuters. Regarding the layoffs, Amazon has not released a public remark. The remaining 16,000 spots are anticipated to be filled in the next round. Let’s dig in to find out more details about the layoff.
Who will be Affected by Amazon’s Layoff?
According to Reuters', these layoffs are likely to have an impact on major divisions like Amazon Web Services (AWS), the retail section, Prime Video, and the People Experience and Technology (PXT) human resources department. The exact extent of the cuts, however, is still unknown and may alter.
Currently, Amazon employs 1.58 million people worldwide, the majority of whom work in warehouses and fulfilment centres. Although the anticipated 30,000 job losses would only impact a small percentage of the company's total workforce, they would account for about 10% of its corporate workforce. This would be the biggest layoff cycle in Amazon's three-decade history if it were implemented. The corporation had laid off almost 27,000 employees in 2022.
Strong AI Push Resulting in Amazon’s Layoffs
Andy Jassy, the CEO of Amazon, has already informed staff members that the company's corporate personnel will shrink as a result of artificial intelligence's increased efficiency. Jassy stated that employees who use AI would be "well-positioned" in a June company-wide email that was posted on Amazon's corporate blog. However, she acknowledged that headcount would decrease as technology is used more widely.
According to a New York Times story from earlier in October 2025, Amazon is creating and using increasingly sophisticated robots to fulfil growing demand without adding additional employees. This deliberate move might result in the replacement of up to 600,000 human jobs by 2033.
