Apple Turns to Google’s Gemini to Upgrade Siri for $1 Billion: Reports
Apple's Siri is all set for a 1.2 trillion parameters AI upgrade via Gemini. So, what can you expect from the new Siri?
According to Bloomberg, Apple is going to sign a deal with Google to use its most powerful AI model, Gemini. Apple aims to improve Siri (Apple’s voice assistant) with this deal. And to access Google's advanced AI systems, Apple will pay about $1 billion every year. This time around, Apple wants to completely rebuild Siri (meaning, smarter, helpful and conversational). Srir has been in the market since February 2010, but it hasn't improved much compared to other tools like ChatGPT. So, what will Google's Gemini do to Siri now? How will Apple handle the data? When can we expect the new Siri to launch? For all that, learn more.
Why Does Apple Need Google for Siri?
To make Siri smarter, Apple would need the support of a strong AI model. Apple has tested several AI systems like Google’s Gemini, OpenAI’s ChatGPT, and Anthropic’s Claude. At last, Apple decided to go ahead with Google’s Gemini after it performed the best (out of all the others).
What Will Google’s Gemini Do for Apple’s Siri?
Google Gemini will use 1.2 trillion parameters (Siri's current AI version uses only 150 billion parameters). This deal will be almost eight times powerful.
Gemini will help Siri with two main things:
- Summarizer – Gemini will help Siro understand and summarise information.
- Planner – Essentially, Gemini will help Siri determine what to do or how to respond to complex requests.
Note: However, Apple will still keep some of its own features.
Project Details Inside Apple
The insider name for the Siri upgrade project is “Glenwood.” The new version of Siri will launch sometime in iOS 26.4 next year. This new Siri version is called “Linwood.”
People leading the project are:
- Mike Rockwell – creator of Apple’s Vision Pro headset.
- Craig Federighi – Apple’s software engineering chief.
How Will Apple Keep Data Private?
Apple itself will handle the data via Apple's own secure servers called Private Cloud Compute. Therefore, Siri conversations and personal data will not be sent to Google. Apple has already secured this with special AI servers for the same reason.
Will Apple Talk About This Deal Publicly?
This is different from Apple's deal with Google on Safari search (meaning, Google is paying billions to be a default search engine on Apple). And Apple, with this deal, will likely not go public because Apple doesn't want people to think that they are overly dependent on Google.
What’s Next for Siri
The new Siri will launch next spring, but this is not final yet. At the same time, Apple is working on its own large AI model with 1 trillion parameters. So, the apparent deals with Google are only temporary.
