Bluesky Admits Missed Basics, Plans Major App Fixes in 2026 Roadmap

Bluesky, a well-known social media app that's in direct competition with 'X' and Threads, admits to its own mistakes. The app was made available to the public in February 2024 and quickly became popular. It now has over 42 million users. All sounds well and good until these users fall inactive. No, hundreds or thousands, but about 40% (data from Similarweb).

The app makers admit that they have missed the basics. So, people have joined, but many didn't stick around. Therefore, the makers have decided to make critical changes to the app in 2026 and have released an official roadmap on January 26. How is the app planning to bring back its users? What will the new changes look like? For all that, learn more.

Why Are Users Leaving Bluesky App?

Bluesky focused on advanced ideas but altogether forgot to fix the basic features that have led to its downfall. The app lost about 40% of its daily users (as compared to last year). Bluesky’s Head of Product, Alex Benzer, openly admitted that they missed:

❌ No private accounts

❌ No post drafts

❌ Weak video support (only up to 3 minutes)

❌ Slow video uploads

❌ Only 4 photos per post

❌ Threads are hard to create

Additional Improvements on Bluesky App 2026 Roadmap

  • Makers want a smarter Discover feed in place by 2026, with an improved algorithm. Therefore, there will be more relatable content every time the user is active.
  • Add topic tags so one can see posts based on their interests. If a user wants more beauty niche content, they can add tags to their profile. Give better “Who to follow” suggestions. This feature will let users find better people to follow on the app.
  • Making Bluesky feel more “real-time” with special live feeds on sports, elections & breaking news.
  • Connecting better with other apps using the AT Protocol. Let's say if you are going LIVE on Twitch or Streamplace, a LIVE badge will automatically appear on your Bluesky profile picture.

Final Thoughts…

The company has officially admitted to these mistakes and released a roadmap to fixing the issues. From private accounts to better algorithms, the makers want to set the basics straight. It will be interesting to see how the new Bluesky gets back from the 40% decline. Till then, keep in touch.
