According to OpenAI India MD Prabhjeet Singh, the number of weekly active users in India has doubled since January 2026. Hence, making the country the largest market globally for ChatGPT. While speaking with a media outlet, Singh explained that the reason for the growth could be the growing number of Indian users who are incorporating ChatGPT into their daily routines and discovering new ways to utilise the chatbot.

This achievement comes after OpenAI CEO and co-founder Sam Altman highlighted India as the fastest-growing market and the second-largest worldwide by users during his visit last year. According to OpenAI, India had over 100 million weekly ChatGPT users in February 2026. Expanding ChatGPT's Indian-language capabilities and focusing on Android-first product development are two ways OpenAI is trying to attract more people outside of big cities.

ChatGPT’s India's Expansion

In August of 2025, OpenAI started hiring locally after announcing the opening of its first office in Delhi NCR, India. In February, during the India AI Impact Summit, it introduced OpenAI for India with the goal of increasing access, infrastructure, and enterprise adoption. Further, it also revealed plans to open offices in Bengaluru and Mumbai. Its collaboration with TCS's HyperVault data centre division begins with 100 MW of capacity and has the ability to scale up to 1 GW.

According to Singh, OpenAI would think about adding capacity when more infrastructure becomes available. Privacy and return on investment are still important factors to consider when adopting, but the capacity will handle the residency and security needs of enterprise data. For local inference, which keeps request processing in India, OpenAI models are also available through AWS's Amazon Bedrock. The expansion of AI's influence is the immediate focus, according to Singh, while the company anticipates a growth in paid subscriptions as customers discover more value in its products. It is believed that OpenAI will also disclose details about UPI and payments in the upcoming weeks.

OpenAI Also Tightening its Digital Security in India

In order to fortify cybersecurity and safeguard vital infrastructure from the abuse of AI agents, OpenAI is collaborating with governmental organisations, banks, and financial organisations. Singh firmly supported transparent AI regulation in order to inspire trust among businesses, developers, and consumers. Ads on ChatGPT are also being expanded by OpenAI in the Indian market. Paid subscriptions and free or reduced-priced access will both be bolstered by advertisements, according to Singh.

Furthermore, he stressed that neither users' personal information nor ChatGPT's reactions would be impacted by adverts. In order to facilitate advertising for Indian firms on ChatGPT, the company has teamed up with Razorpay. The collaboration will see the growth marketing platform from Razorpay Brands may use Engage to create product catalogues, run campaigns, and track their success. Tanishq, Fastrack, Traya, Tata Neu, Rivaah by Tanishq, Shaadi.com, Axis Max Life, Palmonas, and Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS) are among the early brands that will be participating.
