Cloudflare Restructures Workforce, Plans 1,100 Layoffs in AI Push

Worldwide, more than 1,100 workers will be let go by Cloudflare. In preparation for what business leaders are calling the "agentic AI era", the cybersecurity and cloud infrastructure firm is reorganising its operations. Layoffs were revealed in an internal memo that was emailed to staff on 7 May. Although Cloudflare's first-quarter earnings were better than expected, the company's stock dropped more than 14% in after-hours trading as the news broke, leading to the layoffs.

Company executives boasted in the memo that AI usage within Cloudflare had surged 600% in the previous three months. The AI adoption has changed the way teams work from the ground up. The business boasted that thousands of AI agent sessions were being executed every day by staff members in engineering, finance, human resources, and marketing. As a result, many internal structures and procedures are being re-evaluated.

Layoffs Aligned with Re-Organisation of Cloudflare

According to Cloudflare's leadership, the layoffs are not a result of standard cost-cutting measures but rather are associated with a long-term operational overhaul. Cloudflare has reportedly made significant changes to the way teams operate, according to the document. The business announced its intention to rethink all internal processes, teams, and roles in order to better adapt to an AI-driven future. Also, management wanted to make it clear that performance had nothing to do with the decision.

According to the memo, this is not an evaluation of performance or a cost-cutting measure. In this age of agentic AI, these actions revolve around Cloudflare being the model of a world-class, high-growth company. With this announcement, Cloudflare joins an increasing number of tech businesses that are tying employment reorganisation to the deployment of AI and improvements in operations driven by automation.

What Exiting Employees of Cloudflare will Receive?

Cloudflare promised what it called "industry-leading support packages" to employees who left the company. Included in these packages is full base salary all the way through the end of 2026. Additionally, they will continue to receive healthcare support in the US until the end of the year. In addition, equity vesting will continue for employees until August 15. Finally, the one-year equity cliff will be waived for workers, and they will obtain accelerated vesting until August.

Rather than implementing a series of smaller layoffs over the course of several quarters, the corporation opted for a single massive restructure, according to executives. The reorganisation at Cloudflare is indicative of a broader trend in the tech sector as more and more organisations use AI in their fundamental business processes. In contrast to previous waves of automation, which mostly affected software engineering, Cloudflare found that AI technologies are now impacting processes in administrative, operational, and customer-facing roles.
