Cursor Introduces INR 649 India-Exclusive AI Plan Amid Threefold User Growth
Cursor has announced Cursor Start, an AI subscription plan for INR 649, exclusively for India targeting the country’s fast developing developer community, after its Indian user base tripled in the past year. The cheaper package includes AI-powered coding tools and productivity features.
India has traditionally represented the most promising market for artificial intelligence businesses. New to the list of companies doubling down on the nation is Cursor, an artificial intelligence coding business. Cursor Start, the company's first India-specific subscription package, gives Indian developers access to its AI-powered coding tools at a lower price point.
The timing of this move is significant because Elon Musk's SpaceX is rumoured to be planning to acquire the company. X featured comments from Cursor creator Aman Sanger, who claimed, "Our user base in India has tripled in the past year, with more agent requests per user than any other country."

What Cursor is Offering to Indians?
India was also named the Cursor's third-largest market worldwide. Thus, emphasising the country's increasing significance to its goals for expansion. In comparison to the company's regular $20 (about INR 1,700) Pro subscription, Cursor Start's monthly fee for India is INR 649. Updates to Grok 4.5, Cursor Composer 2.5, the iOS app, plugins, support for Model Context Protocol (MCP), hooks, and talents are all part of the new plan.
Developers that want more advanced AI code support than the free version provides but don't want to pay for the premium subscription can use it. Be advised that the plan exclusive to India has no intention of supplanting Cursor's premium Pro tier. Put simply, the advanced AI models are reserved for Pro-tier customers. Cursor Start subscribers will not get access to them. Anthropic frontier AI models, such as Bugbot, Auto Mode, Automations, and the Cursor SDK, will only be available in the more expensive subscription plan and will not be available on Cursor Start.
India Became New Battle Ground for AI Firms
India was the first country in which Cursor implemented its localised pricing model. This is due to the country's developer environment, the company said, which is experiencing fast growth. The expansion into India is timed to coincide with SpaceX's anticipated $60 billion all-stock acquisition of Cursor, which is slated to close later this quarter. The acquisition is anticipated to bolster SpaceX's artificial intelligence aspirations by enhancing the competitiveness of its AI section, which is centred around Elon Musk's xAI, in comparison to other top AI businesses. Curson isn't the only AI company that caters to Indian customers with localised pricing.
Not long ago, OpenAI and Anthropic also unveiled ideas tailored to India. Similarly, OpenAI has increased its efforts to promote Codex, its coding agent, to Indian developers through various community programmes such as hackathons and workshops. Codex now counts India as one of its top five markets. Recently, OpenAI introduced ChatGPT Work, a hybrid of ChatGPT and Codex. Last year, OpenAI introduced ChatGPT Go, its budget-friendly membership plan, to the Indian market before rolling it out to other countries. The monthly pricing is INR 399. It subsequently made the plan free for all users for a year in an effort to encourage adoption. In the meanwhile, Google has released several AI models, tools, and other projects in recent years, expanding its developer offerings.
