Estée Lauder plans acquisition of India’s Forest Essentials

Forest Essentials will soon be acquired by the Estée Lauder Companies, a prominent American cosmetics company. The business announced that it has reached an agreement to acquire the remaining stake in the high-end Ayurvedic brand from India. The acquisition is anticipated to close in the second half of 2026, but it is still subject to regulatory approvals.

Mira Kulkarni, an entrepreneur who founded Forest Essentials in 2000, will remain the CEO of the company post-acquisition from her base in India. The brand's headquarters will continue to be in New Delhi, and Kulkarni will continue to serve as its head. In addition, Samrath Bedi, her son and the executive director, is carrying on the family business. The brand's headquarters, including R&D and in-house manufacturing, will remain in India, according to Estée Lauder.

Entire Business Dynamics of Forest Essential to Remain Intact

The character of Forest Essentials would remain unchanged as a result of the transaction, according to Stéphane de La Faverie, President and CEO of the Estée Lauder Companies. Kulkarni and her team will keep developing the portfolio and guiding its strategy; the brand name, product strategy, and price positioning will stay the same. Faverie elaborated by saying that being true to the Estée Lauder brand's roots is fundamental to the company's concept.

The operational size that the brand needs to take it to the next level is what it will bring. The purchase is strategically important for the global footprint of the US beauty behemoth as well. Adding Forest Essentials to Estée Lauder's current offerings will transform India into the leading developing market for the brand, he claimed. Estée Lauder, which is celebrating its 80th anniversary this year, has a history of working with the company dating back to 2008 when it made a minority stake that was then extended to 49% in 2020.

This agreement, according to de La Faverie, is a significant new phase in a collaboration that has evolved over the last eighteen years. Estée Lauder, according to Kulkarni, brings knowledge and reverence for the brand's history. She emphasised that Estée Lauder recognises the importance of Forest Essentials' cultural roots and operations in India to our overall success. She expressed her confidence that the company will prove to be "a partner who sees our Indian identity not as a limitation but as our greatest strength."

Business Operations of Estée Lauder & Forest Essentials

For over 20 years, the Estée Lauder Companies have been selling their products in India, one of over 150 countries where they are present. Within the Indian market, fourteen of its twenty brands—including skincare, cosmetics, and fragrance—are currently operational. It has acquired or formed relationships with the remaining brands, with the exception of four that were developed internally. With around 200 standalone outlets spread out across India, Forest Essentials is expecting net sales growth in the low double digits. The acquisition, according to De La Faverie, would help the brand grow internationally while keeping its Indian character.
