Google Close to Funding Anthropic’s 500-Megawatt Data Center Expansion

Google is about to power a data center in Texas that Anthropic has leased for a price tag in the multibillions. In the next weeks, Google is likely to confirm its support for the project. As part of this new arrangement, the firm may provide Nexus Data Centers, the site operator, with development loans.

According to media reports, by mid-year, a group of banks had formed a consortium to compete for funding for the project's first stage. Funding of over $5 billion is possible. However, the project should be able to acquire funding at a lesser interest thanks to Alphabet's help, as the tech giant has a solid credit rating.

Details of Anthropic’s 500-Megawatt Data Center

Supposedly, Google and Anthropic have partnered on the 2,800-acre data centre campus. Earlier this month, the project's lease was completed, and building has already begun at the Texas location. Eagle Point, an asset management company, has provided early-stage financing for the project. Rumour has it that the project, which might be ready as early as 2026, will provide capacity of about 500 megawatts. A potential expansion to 7.7 gigawatts of power is, however, still in the works.

According to reports, the location's closeness to many major gas pipelines run by businesses such as Atmos, Enterprise, and Energy Transfer is a key plus. This may pave the way for Nexus to use its own gas turbines to power the facility, thus avoiding the spike pricing associated with a single energy provider. Data centre builders are putting more effort into finding alternatives to grid connections because of the hassle and expense associated with securing them. On the other hand, big IT corporations have become increasingly interested in behind-the-meter power technology.

Tech Giants Inching Closer in Data Centre Race

According to reports, Elon Musk allegedly uses off-grid gas turbines at his Colossus data centres in Mississippi and Tennessee. Contrarily, there are rumours that Amazon and Microsoft are also involved in substantial behind-the-meter projects. At the same time, Meta's "Hyperion" data centre will be powered by Entergy Louisiana, as the company disclosed earlier this week.

The data centre will receive 5.2 gigawatts of power from seven brand new natural gas-fired plants at this new facility. Data centres in Texas could account for almost 36% of the state's overall power demand by 2031, with an estimated 78 GW of consumption, according to projections made by the Electric Reliability Council of Texas.
