Google Plans Firebase Studio Shutdown, Prioritises AI Development Tools

Google Firebase Studio will be decommissioned by March 22, 2027, according to the company. The move is a component of a larger strategy to improve its environment for artificial intelligence developers.

Antigravity and Google AI Studio are two examples of more modern platforms that are getting attention in this paradigm change. Google is aiming its newer platforms as the main venues for developing and delivering AI-driven apps, so this move is a purposeful concentration of its AI development tools. Over the course of a year, Firebase Studio, which debuted as a preview product, will be gradually removed from the market.

Official business documentation states that developers must move their projects before the shutdown date, after which Firebase Studio will permanently erase all remaining data. With the exception of ongoing projects, the ability to create new workspaces will be disabled beginning in June 2026. Lessons learned during the preview period of Firebase Studio are the driving force behind the decision, according to Google. The business is now adding those features to its main products so that developers have "clearer, more powerful paths forward", as it puts it. This shift will be anchored by two platforms.

Fast, browser-based prototyping is being catered to by Google AI Studio, while code-first workflows with powerful agentic AI capabilities are being targeted by Antigravity, its next-generation integrated development environment. Crucially, Google stressed that the closure is exclusive to the Firebase Studio IDE.

Cloud Firestore, Authentication, and App Hosting, three essential Firebase services, will keep running autonomously throughout the migration. Because of this difference, developers can be assured that their apps running on Firebase infrastructure will not be interrupted. Additionally, the organisation stressed that users' data and backend services will be unaffected by developers' choice of development environment.

Instead of a sudden end, the schedule emphasises a gradual change. The migration tools have been released, and developers are being invited to export their projects and switch to AI Studio or Antigravity, whichever suits their workflow requirements better.
