India AI Summit Row: Dario Amodei Labels Event ‘Disorganised’ Amid Tense Exchange with Sam Altman
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei criticised this year's India AI Impact Summit, which took place in New Delhi, calling it "extremely disorganised" on June 18. According to him, just moments before a group photo was to be taken, people were moved around many times. Without implying anything negative about India in particular, he told a media agency that attending an international conference with heads of state is an incredibly chaotic experience.
The CEOs of OpenAI and Amodei had an uncomfortable encounter onstage, leading many to believe that tensions were rising between the two AI firms. Pictures clearly show that Amodei and Altman were not holding hands. But Amodei denied the allegations, stating that the incident was due to a lack of planning and a combination of last-minute confusion and modifications.
Altman and Amodei Locking Horns with Each Other
For four years, from 2016 to 2020, Amodei was OpenAI's VP of research before he founded Anthropic in 2021. Amodei was instrumental in creating early big language models at OpenAI. Notable among these models are GPT-2 and GPT-3. Reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF), a method that would subsequently play a vital role in training conversational AI systems like ChatGPT, was also developed by him and other researchers.
Daniela Amodei, Amodei's sister, and a number of other former OpenAI colleagues co-founded Anthropic when Amodei departed the company in late 2020. Strategic and cultural conflicts, according to media reports, were the reasons for his departure from OpenAI. Despite claims to the contrary, Amodei has stated that concerns about the security of AI were not his only motivation for leaving. He stated that worries about OpenAI's honesty, principles, and organisational behaviour were the deciding factors in his decision.
In the interview, Amodei stated that he is no longer concerned about the growing animosity between Anthropic and OpenAI. While talking about leaving OpenAI, Amodei indirectly attacked Sam Altman. He responded by saying, "At the end of the day, why argue with someone when you don't have the same vision and you don't trust them?"
