Jio, the digital and telecoms company of India's wealthiest man Mukesh Ambani, is seeking public investors for the first time in what is likely to be the biggest share sale in the country. On 21 October, Jio Platforms will launch its initial public offering (IPO) of newly issued shares with the goal of raising INR 302bn ($3.2bn; £2.8bn).

Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd is the biggest private telecom operator in India, and the company plans to use the funds to pay back the loans it took out to establish and grow the business. Despite the overall weakness in the equities market, this is the second major IPO in as many months to take place in India, following the National Stock Exchange's $2.4 billion offering.

Jio’s IPO Offerings

The share price range for Jio Platforms' next issuance, which closes on 23 October, is INR 1,065 to 1,119. This share offering occurs at a time when the NSE Nifty 50 index, which tracks 50 of India's most prominent companies, has declined by more than 12% so far this year. A media source reports that institutional investors spent $3.2 billion on 19 October, 30 times the number of shares given to them prior to the IPO's debut, in bids. Institutional investors' reactions support experts' predictions that Jio's size, network infrastructure, and existing customer ties will entice investors to the IPO.

An Indian broking firm, Centrum Institutional Research, recently wrote a report predicting that Jio will continue to lead the sector in growth for the foreseeable future. This is largely attributable to its expanding digital environment, large-scale infrastructure, and excellent network leadership. However, experts also warn that the corporation faces fierce competition, which might lead to pricing wars and user base attrition.

Growing Tussle Between Jio and Musk

Technology tycoon Elon Musk recently went public with his criticism of budget rival Reliance Jio, announcing that his Starlink satellite internet service will offer affordable prices in India. As Musk's satellite internet startup fights for final certification for a commercial launch in India, Ambani was attacked by Musk on social media platform X. Musk questioned Ambani's status as the "real boss of India" as the criticisms intensified.

There was no official response from Ambani or Reliance over the attacks. Even though the federal government has become the biggest shareholder in competitor Vodafone Idea after converting its debt into equity as part of a relief package, Jio is still facing regulatory uncertainties. Due to the high level of government regulation in India's telecom industry, equity analysts warn that Jio Platforms is still vulnerable to regulatory threats. For a long time, retail investors have anticipated initial public offerings (IPOs) from the conglomerate Reliance group as a means to build wealth.
