MakeMyTrip takes controlling stake in Flamingo Transworld to boost travel packages

The Indian travel aggregator MakeMyTrip announced on March 5 that it has reached a deal to purchase a majority stake in Flamingo Transworld, a regional tour operator. When it comes to group tours, Flamingo is well-liked in the Indian states of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh.

The company's in-house tour managers are proficient in regional languages. Additionally, the tours they curate are known for their extensive coverage of popular attractions and experiences for both local and foreign tourists. They are also known for their selection of Indian meals prepared by on-tour chefs or verified Indian vegetarian/Jain kitchens.

Why Deal is Beneficial for MakeMyTrip?

According to Rajesh Magow, co-founder and group chief executive officer of MakeMyTrip's Holiday Packages division, Flamingo is highly complementary to MMT's growth plan. It is a robust and expanding company that has carved out a special niche for itself in the group travel industry. MMT intends to increase the variety of holiday packages available to its clients by capitalising on the complementary client base, product lines, and distribution strategies of the two businesses.

According to Mohit Kabra, group chief operating officer of MakeMyTrip, the company sees a lucrative opportunity for expansion with its planned acquisition of Flamingo. In addition, it would facilitate MakeMyTrip's expansion into regional markets throughout India. The director and co-founder of Flamingo Transworld, Sanjay Shah, made the observation that Flamingo has created something special in the Indian travel industry for more than 30 years: true trust. The brand has expanded by delving deeper, offering chef-led excursions and regional language guides.

MakeMyTrip Partners with OpenAI

On February 18th, MakeMyTrip announced a partnership with OpenAI to improve AI-led trip discovery and collect searches with high intent. As part of the partnership, MakeMyTrip will integrate additional AI capabilities into its app by leveraging OpenAI's APIs. By integrating with the company's generative AI planning assistant, Myra, travellers would be able to seamlessly transition from conversational inspiration to booking.

With this change, the company claims it will be the go-to platform for AI-powered vacation planning. This will be accomplished by converting natural-sounding questions into options that are prepared for purchase across various services, including airfare, hotels, and auxiliary items. The partnership signifies a change from being a bystander to actively engaging in AI-driven discovery.

This paves the way for the platform to turn spoken intentions into bookable results. Co-Founder and Group CEO Rajesh Magow of MakeMyTrip said that the partnership with OpenAI makes it such that when travellers begin their adventure through conversation, MakeMyTrip is an easy extension of that discovery process. Deep integration of AI into the marketplace, supported by MakeMyTrip's unique travel data, allows it to go beyond inspiration and provide scalable, tailored, bookable results.
