Meta Agrees to Flag Child Sexual Abuse Cases as India Intensifies Crackdown
Meta will submit suspected cases of child sexual abuse to law authorities, as India escalates its assault on social media sites over kid safety online. The corporation will also raise concerns through the I4C and will work with authorities to tackle harmful content.
Meta, Facebook's parent company, has committed to reporting incidents of sexual abuse of children to public authorities. This action is being taken in response to the Centre's recent crackdown on social media sites that fail to adequately protect minors.
No social media company operating in India can operate without adhering to the non-negotiable premise of keeping children safe online. High-ranking authorities have stated that they are actively working with social media sites to reduce the spread of damaging material. Meta has committed to reporting any incidents involving children to law enforcement as a first step in ensuring that social media platforms are safe for children to use.
Centre Putting Social Media Platforms Under Strict Scanner
In order to detect and delete such content, officials stated that the Centre is in constant communication with all other platforms. Any platform that does not actively work to protect minors will face consequences. Keeping kids safe on Meta's platforms is their top concern, according to a company representative. Furthermore, he emphasised that the company will collaborate with law enforcement to bring those guilty for these crimes to justice.
The representative for Meta announced that the company will now report concerns about kid safety to the cyber crime site run by the Internet Crime Complaint Center (I4C) in an effort to bolster joint efforts to address this threat. In light of the government's ongoing efforts to hold digital platforms more accountable and ensure that intermediaries take sufficient steps to stop the spread of harmful content—particularly content that affects children—this development is not surprising.
Meta Officials Summoned
The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has issued a summons to the MD and Head of Meta India, requiring them to appear before the commission. This action is being made as part of a larger investigation into purported ads that include Child Sexual Exploitation and Abuse Material (CSEAM).
After a report by BBC Eye brought attention to the accusations, the child rights organisation took the initiative to commence the process independently. The NCPCR sought a response from Meta Platforms, Inc., after the report was published on July 3, 2026. A week subsequent to that, Meta sent its response.
In order to determine the facts and investigate the circumstances of the accusations, the Commission chose to initiate a formal investigation after examining the company's response. Verifying the claims and evaluating Meta's explanation will be the primary goals of the investigation. Earlier, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) had requested that the Delhi Police conduct an extensive inquiry into allegations that Meta's Instagram was being used to promote Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM) in India through sponsored adverts.
