Meta Restructures: 200 Employees Set to Lose Jobs in Bay Area
Meta is planning to lay off about 200 people in the Bay Area and surrounding regions. The Burlingame, California location will lose 124 jobs, while Sunnyvale will lose 74. Workers in Burlingame will be let go on May 22nd, and those in Sunnyvale will follow on May 29th, as per the planned layoffs in late May.
All impacted employment will be permanently removed, according to filings with California state regulators. The layoffs, which hit Meta's sales and recruiting teams as well as its Reality Labs hardware division, are the result of a prior announcement made last month. Meta may provide alternate positions to some of the laid-off employees.
Meta on a Layoff Spree
This new information follows last month's mass layoffs of 700 Meta employees. As part of its efforts to realign its employment and cost structure with its long-term AI aspirations, the corporation has announced job layoffs. As the tech giant moves its attention from legacy goals to next-generation technology, this move is part of a larger process of recalibration.
Executive chairman Mark Zuckerberg has been more vocal about his goal of developing "superintelligence" and other forms of sophisticated artificial intelligence. It is a piece of gear that can serve as an individualised virtual assistant. This aspiration is currently influencing choices in areas such as organisational structure, investment, and hiring. Meta is rebranding itself as an AI-first corporation and owns platforms including WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook.
Meta Facing Legal Challenges Over Layoffs
Company personnel decisions are under more scrutiny, which is another factor contributing to the change. Accusations that layoffs affected senior employees have led Meta to face legal challenges. The company has also denied rumours that it slashed as much as 20% of its employees.
Meta had approximately 79,000 employees as of the end of December, as stated in its annual reports. The present round of layoffs may be lower than anticipated, but it shows that the company is still eager to realign its workforce with its strategic goals.
Global Giants Also Trimming Their Workforce
Goldman Sachs, Oracle, and Amazon were among the other major employers to lay off workers. Thousands of employees in a variety of industries and geographies were affected by these megafirms. Companies typically associate AI with these layoffs as a cost-cutting measure. At the same time, numerous news agencies have stated that around 20,000 people could lose their jobs in the next years.
With over 120,000 tech experts losing their jobs across 271 organisations last year, the technology sector saw major labour cutbacks. Layoffs.fyi claims that this is the beginning of a time of intense reorganisation caused by the widespread use of AI.
