Microsoft Expands India Data Centre Footprint as AI Race Heats Up
Microsoft has increased its India data center footprint with a new facility in Hyderabad, bringing its cloud regions to four as competition in AI and cloud computing intensifies. The corporation is eyeing India’s enormous digital market.
On August 6, Microsoft opened its biggest data centre in India in Hyderabad. As it competes with rivals in the rapidly expanding artificial intelligence sector in the country, it has also picked up early adopters such as Adani Group and HDFC Bank. Microsoft now has four cloud regions in India, with the addition of the India South Central facility. The other three are in Mumbai, Chennai, and Pune.
These advancements have solidified the brand's status as the leading cloud-computing supplier in the nation. The Windows maker plans to invest over $20.5 billion to grow its business in India. Consequently, taking a chance on a market with over a billion internet users and a tech talent pool that rivals the best in the world.
AWS, Oracle and Microsoft Enhancing Data Network of India
Hyderabad is also becoming an increasingly important hub for global technology enterprises. Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft (MSFT), and Oracle (ORCL) are reportedly growing via colocation partnerships and controlled cloud areas. A large portion of the available capacity is now accounted for by AWS, which established its Hyderabad region in 2022. Oracle is planning to build its own data centre capacity in Hyderabad, as previously indicated. But there are new difficulties that arise as a result of the fast increase.
Recent media reports stressed the importance of improving peripheral areas' access to power and networks. In addition, the country's power grid needs improvement in order to accommodate large-scale campuses. Despite the single-window clearance procedure, it was also pointed out that planning approvals still impact project timelines.
According to Knight Frank India's Joseph Thilak, who is also the head of data centre business in India and the executive director of occupier strategy & solutions, the data centre industry in India is reaching a more developed stage. Demand for AI-led computing, growing enterprise digitalisation, and ongoing cloud usage are the main drivers of these centres. He predicted that India would become Asia's data centre hub in the future thanks to rising demand, better connectivity, and a governmental climate that encourages investment.
Microsoft Pushes Developers to Use OpenAI’s AI Models
In an attempt to optimise efficiency, Microsoft is advising developers working on AI coding projects to depend on OpenAI's top-tier model rather than competing offerings. This week, Microsoft's CoreAI engineering division VP Jay Parikh published an internal message to staff. This message explained how the company is increasing the return on investment (ROI) from its token investment by moving more workloads to OpenAI models.
One token is equivalent to approximately 3/4 of a word, and they serve as a measure for the magnitude of AI processing. The software giant Microsoft has developed its own AI framework. More than 11,000 models, including those from Anthropic, are available to cloud users through this model. The software titan also wants its employees to make the most of the intellectual property rights that stem from their early investment in OpenAI.
