The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) is reportedly working on a standardised, interoperable framework for soundboxes. This new initiative will enable all payment apps to support transactions based on the Unified Payments Interface. As soundboxes proliferate among stores and mom-and-pop shops, NPCI's unified platform will function independently of the specific QR code used to process the transaction.

Any one payment app can have the soundbox registered, and the merchant can link all of the QR codes to that app. From now on, the confirmation will always occur through the same soundbox, regardless of the merchant's app of choice for accepting payments.

Competition Intensifies in Smatspeaker Segment      

The smartspeaker from soon-to-be-IPO PhonePe got a major upgrade last year. This new speaker was designed to improve the efficiency of power and connectivity, thereby facilitating digital payments for offline merchants throughout the nation. According to PhonePe's UDRHP, as of September 30, 2025, their merchant network had 9.19 million net deployed payment devices. Among these gadgets are its EDC machines and soundbox, which is referred to as a smartspeaker. Zoho Payments, the fintech division of the software as a service (SaaS) behemoth Zoho, introduced a smart point-of-sale device and a static QR code with a soundbox last year.

The development is occurring at a time when UPI has become the standard digital transaction method for daily uses. In April, the total value of UPI transactions was 22.35 billion. To facilitate UPI payments for youths who do not have access to a bank account, Paytm introduced "Paytm Pocket Money" earlier today. In this way, legal guardians can monitor their children's spending and set limits on their access.
