OpenAI Targets India Expansion to Drive Personalized Voice AI Innovation
India is an important market for OpenAI's user acquisition efforts and a proving ground for future AI products, such as a personalised voice-interaction feature. According to Abhi Muchhal, feature's product lead for international expansion, this functionality is scheduled to be released in the near future.
In order to train a multilingual voice assistant that understands real-world human speech, the US corporation is establishing a larger engineering staff in the country. The company is making great strides towards AGI with this move, which comes as it faces stiffer competition from Anthropic and Google.
AI Firms Building Strong Presence in India
Although Muchhal mentioned that the corporation is expanding its engineering staff in the country, he did not disclose how many people are working on this project. Currently, fewer than 30 individuals are directly employed by OpenAI in India. There are a total of eight market positions available, with four of those being for engineers. In August 2025, OpenAI revealed plans to open a 50-seat office in New Delhi, marking its initial presence in the nation.
Along with Altman's most recent trip to the nation, the company announced on February 18 that it will be opening operations in Mumbai and Bengaluru later in 2026. At the same time, Anthropic's co-founder and CEO Dario Amodei visited India on February 18 to establish the company's first office. There is now just one engineering position advertised in Bengaluru, but it is also assembling a local engineering team.

India Largest Market for OpenAI
After going public with ChatGPT in late 2022, OpenAI found one of its biggest markets in India. According to CEO Sam Altman's February 2026 announcement, ChatGPT has 100 million active users each week in the nation. Altman had previously predicted that the nation would "soon" become OpenAI's top market worldwide at a roundtable that Mint attended in August 2025.
The firm, which finally filed for its long-awaited public listing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on 8 June, is consequently placing a priority on a successful launch in the Indian market. This came before it released IndQA on November 8, 2025, which was one of the only publicly accessible Indic language benchmarks.
Muchhal was involved in the development of IndQA before joining OpenAI in March of last year. Muchhal elaborated by saying that current AI models can grasp both the language and its cultural background. However, the real challenge is in making them communicate as though they comprehend both. According to him, AI should be able to recognise the speaker's accent and decide whether to mimic it. He stated that this is important since human speech differs significantly from person to person and that accomplishing this will bring OpenAI closer to AGI.
