OpenAI's 8,000 Hiring Plan in 2026: Bold Move or Big Risk?
OpenAI's 8,000 Hiring Plan in 2026: Bold Move or Big Risk?

The way companies laid people off in recent years caused panic among those whose jobs were safe. According to Layoffs.fyi, a website that reports (timely) layoffs, delineated a massive 124,201 tech job cuts from about 271 companies in 2025. The number right now is 39,482 by 66 tech companies (so far in 2026). Now, what does this say? AI is taking over jobs, and companies are in for making more money with fewer people and leaner teams on board.

Amazon (14,000+), Accenture (11,000+), Microsoft (15,000), Intel (up to 24,000), TCS (12,000–20,000) and more. But, do you think there's one big company that wants to hire 8,000 more people by the end of 2026? Yes, OpenAI. So, what is going right or wrong with the company that it’s hiring more? For that, read through.

OpenAI’s New Job Roles in Child Safety and National Security

The company has faced serious backlash for being negligent about security filters in ChatGPT.  Adam Raine, a 16-year-old from California, allegedly took his life using ChatGPT. And it was an eye-opener for all AI companies to set safety standards first and foremost.

And so OpenAI has created 4 roles to investigate AI abuse more meticulously (in matters of child safety and national security). Not just that, roles like sales, research, finance, and marketing are welcoming applicants (unlike other companies that specifically laid off in those areas).

Why Is OpenAI Hiring 8,000 Employees in 2026? (Anthropic Angle)...

According to data from Ramp (a payments company), new business customers are choosing Anthropic 3x more than OpenAI. However, OpenAI reacted otherwise. It argued that the data is misleading and that big companies don't pay by credit card (as Ramp tracks). Nonetheless, OpenAI still wants to speed up, and here's why.

OpenAI vs Anthropic

OpenAI

  • OpenAI has a 'do everything' approach because.
  • It built ChatGPT and ChatGPT Atlas (consumer/enterprise chatbots), an API Platform (for developers), DALL-E (images), Sora (video), Whisper (speech), and more.
  • It has a huge user base of 900M+ (mostly consumers). Here's the catch, 90% of them don’t pay. Moving ahead, it wants to increase its market share to 50% (currently 40%).
  • It's also refocusing on ChatGPT + Codex (coding + productivity).

Anthropic

  • Whereas Anthropic has a strong focus on business customers who pay.
  • Claude (especially Claude Code) is its hero product, and the company is rapidly growing, adding ~$1B in annual revenue each week.
  • It has a unique focus strategy that does not include 'do everything', but rather serves the enterprise (business) market well.

Who’s Winning (OpenAI or Anthropic)? Final Thoughts...

Both OpenAI and Anthropic are hiring. Well, OpenAI has an entirely doubling-the-numbers plan, unlike others. It wants higher profits as Anthropic becomes stronger by the day. At the same time, it's taking on a big risk. OpenAI is already putting in big billion-dollar bets on its new tools and AI strategies, hiring 8,000 employees by the end of 2026, which could put pressure on its revenue. However, we'll have to wait and see what happens next. Stick with us.
