Opendoor Exits India, Cuts Around 250 Jobs in Major Workforce Reduction

The real estate technology firm Opendoor, headquartered in the United States, has declared that it will be terminating its operations in India and laying off approximately 250 workers there. Opendoor 2.0 was launched a few months ago with almost 250 people in India, according to a memo written by Opendoor CEO Kaz Nejatian.

There has been a recent reshoring of some of these positions to the US. The company is starting to wind down its operations in India today and is finishing the move of these roles closer to its American consumers, Nejatian added.

What Opendoor will Provide to Exiting Employees?

The corporation is offering its Indian employees a transition package that includes severance, outplacement assistance, and other resources, according to Nejatian. A limited group of team members "will stay on" to finish the transfer of important workstreams, he added. Additionally, he urged other Indian businesses to think about employing impacted individuals. These individuals are top-notch, according to what Nejatian said.

Therefore, any company with an office in India should consider hiring them. "Consider this my reference letter and hire them," he posted. The layoffs, according to Nejatian, are a component of the "Opendoor 2.0" programme at the corporation. Embedding AI into workflows, cutting costs, and bringing some functions closer to its home market in the US are the main goals of this programme.

The CEO of Opendoor has stated that the company will be a "much smaller company by headcount but a much larger company by impact" as a result of its Opendoor 2.0 program. Significant operational changes are in the works across the board, according to Netajian. Reduced tool usage, workflow steps, and workarounds are all part of Opendoor's goal to streamline its operations.

AI Vs Humans Battle Continues

According to what Nejatian noted, Opendoor used to be all about assembling a massive crew in India to manage manual processes. But now it's hiring tiny customer-facing teams across the US that are AI native so that operations may be handled closer to the clients. The layoffs are part of Opendoor's ongoing strategy to reduce headcount over the past few years. Reportedly, the company's global workforce decreased from 1,470 employees in 2024 to 1,042 at the end of 2025.

At the same time, Opendoor's foreign staff contracted sharply, going from 342 personnel in 2016 to 184 at year's end. Opendoor has stated its continued dedication to its business in the EU, despite the fact that it is terminating its operations in India.
