Roughly 10% of PayPal Holdings' local workforce in India has been laid off, with 600 people affected. The American fintech company is aiming to cut costs and streamline operations worldwide, and this move is a part of that endeavour. Staff members in the areas of technology, engineering, operations, payments, and finance in the cities of Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Chennai have all been laid off.

Some of PayPal's most important US-based innovation and technology hubs are located in these cities. As a result of economic challenges and increasing investments in automation and artificial intelligence, global technology and financial services organisations are reevaluating their personnel requirements, which has led to the latest round of layoffs.

Layoff Shocked the Employees of PayPal

Several impacted workers complained to a news outlet that they were given short notice before the decision was announced. The elimination of their positions was announced on a conference call that was held on the morning of August 31st, according to one employee. The employee claims that right after the meeting, system access was disabled. An additional affected employee informed the media outlet that they were informed of their dismissal over direct email.

Severance packages that included one month's pay and aid with finding new employment were communicated to affected employees. Several workers reported that, as of the reporting date, they had not yet received any additional information about the settlement. The firings in India are supposedly a part of a larger plan to cut jobs around the world.

The Asia-Pacific region was the first to be hit by PayPal's layoffs, and the company has since extended negotiations with impacted employees across the US, EU, ME, and Africa. May saw the announcement that the corporation would be slashing its worldwide employment by 20% over the course of two to three years. A net savings of $1.5 billion in gross run-rate is targeted during that time frame.

India Remains Centre of Operations Amid PayPal’s Global Layoffs

About 23,800 people were working for PayPal around the world as of the year 2025's conclusion. In the end, some 4,760 jobs might be impacted globally, according to the company's declared personnel reduction plan. India is not the only country affected by the reorganisation. There were 164 layoffs in Ireland on that same day, according to media sources. In other words, they make up about 12% of PayPal's local staff. India is still an important part of PayPal's global operations, even with the reduction of staff.

In 2008, the business launched its first research centre in Chennai. Today, it is the largest technological centre outside of the US. Core payment platforms, distributed computing systems, mobile experiences, and cloud infrastructure are all supported by the facility. Its Bengaluru headquarters serves as a centre for innovation in data science, computer vision, artificial intelligence, and machine learning. At the same time, the 2019-opened Hyderabad technology centre backs data science, fraud prevention, and risk management programmes for SMEs.
