Railway Stations to Get McDonald’s, KFC and Other Top Food Chains Soon
Indian Railways has made the decision to allow popular restaurants with a single brand to operate at train stations. The Railway Board changed its catering services policy to incorporate the South Central Railway's suggestion that popular single-brand restaurants like McDonald's, KFC, Pizza Hut, Baskin Robbins, Bikanerwala, Haldiram, etc., be permitted at train stations, just like they are at airports. On November 13, 2025, the Railway Board sent out a circular to the general managers of all zonal railways, stating that the e-auction policy might permit premium single-brand food shops that are either company-owned or run by franchisees.
Why Indian Railways is Taking this Step?
There was to be a requirement and rationale for accommodating such outlets. Three different kinds of food kiosks are allowed to offer drinks, snacks, and light refreshments at train stations in accordance with the Indian Railways Catering Policy, 2017. The fourth kind of shop was the "Premium Brand Catering Outlet."
According to the circular, a special section would be created for the purpose of allocating "Premium Brand Catering Outlets" in accordance with the current e-auction policy. Like other catering stalls, "Premium Brand Catering Outlet" would have a five-year lease. Every other instruction and guideline, including the setting of the minimum licence fee, would be consistent with the current policy.
Amrit Bharat Station Scheme
Under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS), the railways have started a large-scale initiative to renovate railway stations all around the nation. The architecture, culture, and tradition of the local area will be included into the design of the station structures. Making stations more hygienic, cosy, and user-friendly is the aim. This entails enhancing platforms, roofing, restrooms, waiting areas, and access and departure points. Where necessary, amenities like free Wi-Fi, escalators, and lifts are added.
Additionally, improved information systems and signage are available to assist travellers. Executive lounges and dedicated spaces for business meetings will be available at certain stations. Under the "One Station One Product" initiative, local goods will be offered for sale at kiosks, and stations will be redesigned to be more appealing and environmentally friendly. The Amrit Bharat Mission plan also prioritises modernising the station structures, use the station to connect the city's two sides, and integrating stations with other modes of transportation, including as buses and metros.
Stations are being made especially accessible to people with disabilities. The enhancements also include improved planning, noise-free tracks, and environmentally friendly solutions. The ultimate goal is to transform stations into thriving urban hubs that are used for more than just transportation. With the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, Indian Railways is making a determined effort to update its infrastructure and improve the journey for millions of passengers.
