Rolls-Royce Targets Stronger India Ties in Defence, Aerospace and Energy Sectors
Rolls-Royce wants to increase its footprint in India in areas including defence, aerospace, civil aviation and energy. CEO Tufan Erginbilgiç held a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on strategic alliances supporting India’s economic growth and national security.
Rolls-Royce, a world leader in aviation engines, plans to increase its presence in the Indian market by bolstering its defence, aerospace, and energy divisions. The growth is in line with the company's recent global board meeting, which was hosted in India for the first time. While in India for three days, Rolls-Royce CEO Tufan Erginbilgiç met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to talk about the company's plans for the future and how it can be a strategic partner in India to help achieve the country's goals.
The company claims that its lengthy history in the Indian market, network of industrial relationships, increasing engineering presence, and developing manufacturing and supply chain ecosystem are all foundational to its expansion aspirations. According to Erginbilgiç, India plays a significant role in Rolls-Royce's plans for future growth. Erginbilgiç elaborated by saying that RR aspires to become an even more integral element of India's strategic partnership in bolstering the country's energy and infrastructure sectors. Further, he noted that RR will also contribute to India's national security and connectivity efforts, as well as its economic development.
Specifics of Rolls-Royce Expansion Plans
Erginbilgiç elaborated by saying that the business is looking at new possibilities in the power and propulsion sectors as well as building sovereign aero-engine competence. In August 2026, Rolls-Royce and Reliance Industries announced their strategic intent to collaborate. This collaboration was done in order to bring India's Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) programme a sovereign indigenous combat engine.
This engine would be designed, developed, manufactured, and delivered by this joint venture. An integral feature of the planned collaboration would be the creation of an Aerospace Gas Turbine Complex (AGTC) in India, which would house the AMCA engine programme. Manufacturing, design, development, testing, production, and through-life support are all part of the complex's purported vision as a fully autonomous aero-engine ecosystem, according to the business. Plus, it has the potential to build a national capability that can support future aerospace applications in the military, navy, and civil sector.
Rolls-Royce’s Future Roadmap for India
The Rolls-Royce's leadership team in India and government stakeholders were met during the visit by the board of directors and chair, Dame Anita Frew, according to the company. During their tour to the company's Global Capability and Innovation Center in Bengaluru, the board saw demonstrations of Indian capabilities provided by teams specialising in engineering, defence, digital, and information technology, according to Rolls-Royce.
Furthermore, Rolls-Royce announced that it is actively seeking possibilities in its power systems, civil aviation, and military divisions to assist India in its pursuit of energy and defence self-sufficiency, as well as its growth in civil aviation, infrastructure, and industry. During the October visit of UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer to India, Erginbilgic was a member of the business delegation. At the time, the business expressed "deep ambitions" to grow the Indian market domestically.
