Samsung Eyes Display Manufacturing Expansion in India, Seeks PLI Scheme Extension
Instead of moving operations from other nations, Samsung wants to increase its manufacturing presence in India by focusing on local production, exports, and component manufacturing. According to The Economic Times, the company has applied for components to manufacture mobile phone displays in India under the production-linked incentive (PLI) system.
Additionally, it has contacted the government to request an extension of the recently concluded smartphone PLI scheme. Samsung is eager to establish India as a major hub for manufacturing and technology, according to JB Park, president and CEO of the company's Southwest Asia division. Additionally, he stated that Samsung is in discussions with the government regarding the potential continuation of incentives under a new phase of the PLI Scheme.
Why Samsung is not Shifting its Base from India?
According to Park, it is not economically viable to move capacity that has already been installed. Rather, it would make sense for Samsung to expand operations at its Noida site if it needed to add more capacity. Samsung has no plans to relocate its current manufacturing facilities to India from nations like Vietnam.
Vietnam continues to be the company's primary worldwide manufacturing location. But if demand increases organically, Park said, India might see more investment. Samsung is willing to source semiconductor chips from India as long as they are reasonably priced and up to par. This could help India achieve its goal of becoming a more powerful participant in the global supply chain for chips. According to Park, Samsung aims to collaborate with regional partners whenever feasible and progressively broadens its Indian supplier network as quality and technology advance.
PLI Scheme Motivated Samsung India’s Exports
Samsung attributed its increased exports from India to the PLI initiative. Exports accounted for 42% of Samsung's India income in the fiscal year 2025. The company's revenue in India surpassed INR 1 trillion, up 37% over the previous year. Samsung ships a lot of goods from India, including its flagship smartphones, which are very expensive.
Park said that as long as governmental support persists, export growth will be consistent and sustained. Samsung is awaiting permission from the government to increase the number of smartphone displays it assembles at its Noida facility. The project started in 2021 and is a brownfield expansion. According to the news article, the corporation also wants to get more from Indian vendors in order to gradually improve local value addition.
