Spain Set to Introduce UPI Payments for Indian Tourists
India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is in talks with Spain’s Bizum digital payments platform to allow Indian tourists to make UPI payments in Spain, bringing the country a step closer to enabling such transactions.
As India looks to expand the use of its Unified Payments Interface (UPI) in foreign markets, it may soon be easier for Indian tourists visiting Europe to make purchases. During the recent European tour of India's Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, the two countries' leaders decided to advance technical talks aimed at facilitating interoperability between UPI and Bizum, Spain's digital payments platform.
Cooperation in fintech and UPI integration was also a separate topic of conversation with Estonia. Nevertheless, the integration's specifics and schedule have not been decided upon yet. Indian tourists may soon have another digital payment option to choose from thanks to UPI's growing popularity.
Integration of UPI Internationally a Game-Changer Move
Instant bank-to-bank transfers through mobile applications have made UPI a frequently utilised payment mechanism in India. Travellers from India may soon be able to pay at participating businesses in partner nations using UPI-enabled applications if comparable links are extended internationally. Payments for restaurants, shops, local transportation, and other commonplace small-value transactions could become much easier with this.
Having a familiar payment system available helps alleviate tourists' concerns about carrying large sums of cash or relying solely on overseas cards. India has been actively seeking international alliances to increase UPI's global footprint. France, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, Mauritius, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, and Qatar are among the markets where UPI services are currently accessible. India is aiming to promote its digital public infrastructure abroad, and this extension is a part of that endeavour. In addition, it will be easy to establish links for cross-border payments.
The Catch of the International UPI System
Acceptance of UPI will still be contingent on local relationships, merchant availability, and payment app compatibility, even as it extends internationally. When travelling, it's important to have an international debit or credit card on hand for things like hotel deposits, big purchases, or places that don't accept UPI.
It should be mentioned that travellers can have more convenience with digital payment connectivity. While using any international payment method, customers should be aware of any applicable foreign exchange charges, transaction restrictions, and payment periods.
