Starbucks Strengthens India Presence as Global Restructuring Continues

In an effort to save $2 billion, Starbucks Corp. is considering opening a technology office in India. A message was sent to employees stating that the new hub is scheduled to be built during the company's fiscal year 2027, which begins in October. After deciding on a location later this year, Starbucks plans to begin hiring in India for its first corporate office.

In a message from Chief Technology Officer Anand Varadarajan, Starbucks expressed its intention to return some functions currently outsourced to the company. The company had previously outsourced those positions during a restructuring, but it has since reversed course.

Starbucks Going In For Full Tech Spinoff

In an effort to boost cooperation and provide the corporation greater control over its technological operations, Starbucks is planning to establish a multi-site technology structure, according to Varadarajan. This approach is typical of the growing trend among MNCs to handle technology in-house rather than relying on third-party vendors. In the report, Starbucks states that they have faith in India's capabilities in software engineering, cloud infrastructure, enterprise platforms, digital operations, and technology support services, among other areas.

India is an obvious choice for the company's internal engineering teams to expand to since the country already has several technology partners. The news of the India office opening comes as Starbucks is undergoing a massive reorganisation under the leadership of CEO Brian Niccol.

Starbucks Trimming Down Global Workforce

The Seattle headquarters of Starbucks has laid off 61 corporate technology employees. Last week, the company's Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification filing revealed that this action is being made as part of a comprehensive operational revamp under CEO Brian Niccol.

With the layoffs underway, the worldwide coffee company is moving forward with a turnaround plan to boost service speed, customer happiness, and operational performance across the board. The employment decrease is unrelated to the previously disclosed plans to move certain technology functions to a new location in Nashville, Tennessee, according to the WARN filing dated May 7.

In an attempt to streamline operations and cut costs in the long run, the company is putting more emphasis on developing its own technology capabilities and less on relying on outside vendors. Tata Starbucks, a partnership between Starbucks and Tata Consumer Products, is currently running operations in India. The partnership oversees the operations of Starbucks cafes in various cities across India. On the other hand, Starbucks' forthcoming technology hub will be the country's first fully fledged corporate office.
