Tata Consultancy Services Plans Expansion of AI Data Centers in India as Demand Surges
Tata Consultancy Services Ltd is restructuring its business model to take advantage of emerging technology. It recently inked an agreement with OpenAI to construct AI data centres in India and is now in the final stages of finalising arrangements with other tech titans. Several additional hyperscalers are being considered by TCS, according to CEO K. Krithivasan.
The CEO made the announcement during an interview held at the London headquarters of the business. Several parties are in advanced discussions with the IT business. He went on to say that his organisation is in a mad dash to expand the nation's AI infrastructure, seeing a huge chance to use the technology in the most populated country in the world. He estimated that by 2030, India will require 10 gigawatts of capacity from AI data centres; however, only approximately 5 or 6 gigawatts have been disclosed thus far. TCS is offering its assistance in bridging that gap.
TCS Redesigning its Business Operations
Increased competition, changes to US immigration restrictions, and the possibility of AI-driven disruption have all put pressure on TCS in recent years. Following Krithivasan's takeover in June of 2023, the once-loved Indian stock market darling has had a 20% drop in share price this year and a 23% drop overall. The services that TCS and its competitors have long provided are losing business to other companies, according to Bloomberg Intelligence analyst Anurag Rana.
A complete departure from tradition is not in Krithivasan's future plans. But in his view, AI presents TCS with yet another chance to counsel corporate clients on the best ways to implement new technologies, just as it has done with cloud computing and mobile services in the past. He doesn't think Anthropic PBC's or Alphabet Inc.'s massive language models will magically eliminate the requirement for firms to run massive tech systems and employ consulting teams to maintain them running well. Companies in the banking, retail, and telecom industries rely on intricate systems that have been in place for decades to facilitate employee support, data storage, inventory tracking, and customer delivery.
Data Centre a New Twist in TCS’ Business Strategy
TCS is changing its business strategy with its investments in data centres. The Mumbai-based firm and OpenAI have formed a partnership to construct facilities with a power output of 100 MW to 1 GW, as stated during the AI Impact Summit in February in India. Costing $35–$50 billion, a 1 GW data centre is normally out of TCS's price range.
The cost of the building itself, including the racks, connections, electricity, and cooling, will be partially covered by TCS, according to Krithivasan. Estimates put the price tag between $7 billion and $8 billion. The first investment of $1 billion will come from TCS and $1 billion from partner TPG Inc. The balance will be covered by debt. Krithivasan believes that the true benefit will come from TCS's ability to differentiate itself through its AI infrastructure, valuable and perhaps exclusive access to top models, and NVIDIA Corp. chips.
