Tata Power Accelerates Semiconductor Push with INR 6,600 Crore Odisha Wafer Plant
Tata Power to start construction of 10 GW solar wafer & ingot manufacturing factory in Odisha in October, eyes commercial ops by January 2028 The project also adds to India’s semiconductor and clean energy ecosystem with the help of governmental incentives.
On July 27, Tata Power CEO Praveer Sinha announced that the company's 10 GW solar wafer and ingot manufacturing facility in Odisha is set to be commissioned in January 2028. According to Sinha, a factory for making wafers and ingots is going up in Odisha.
The land has already been acquired by Tata Power, and preparatory works, such as obtaining environmental permits, water arrangements, and other necessary licenses, are currently in progress. On top of that, he elaborated by saying that building is set to start in October and that the facility is aimed at becoming operational by January 2028.
Why Tata Power Opted for Odisha?
Sinha explained that before deciding on Odisha, the company considered the incentives and support provided by other states. In addition, he mentioned that the company chose Odisha as the site of the project after considering the incentives and support provided by several governments, such as reduced electricity costs and other gains. Furthermore, he said that Tata's pre-existing property holding in Gopalpur was also crucial. There was already land in Gopalpur that Tata had planned to develop into a Tata SEZ.
Due to the already-acquired land, the firm moves swiftly to finalise Gopalpur, Odisha, as the site of the project. The project's total manufacturing capacity will reach 10 GW after two 5 GW phases of development. In December 2025, there were hints in the media that the Odisha government had given the green light to Tata Power's plan to build the INR 10,000-crore plant. The state's clearance was contingent upon the inclusion of various incentives, such as a 100% power duty waiver for 20 years and a 30% capital investment subsidy. The government went a step further by offering a subsidy of INR 2 per unit of power bill and paying back all net SC/ST charges for 15 years.
SECI Awards Tata Power 324 MW Power Supply Project
Tata Power said on July 20 that Solar Energy Corporation of India Ltd. (SECI) had sent a Letter of Award (LoA) to the company. The LoA states that Tata Power's 1,000 MW Pumped Hydro Storage Project (PSP) in Bhivpuri, Maharashtra, will supply 324 MW of power.
According to a statement from the company, the project was chosen through SECI's tariff-based global competitive bidding process for the delivery of 1,500 MW / 12,000 MWh of power from pumped hydro storage facilities within the country. An online reverse auction was used to obtain the project. Scheduled for commissioning by 2029, it has a Pumped Storage Purchase (PSP) deal in place for 40 years.
The BOO model will be utilised for the project's development. Furthermore, it will store energy for 8 hours, allowing for a consistent supply of power even during times of high demand. Through the Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS), it will be linked to the 765/400 kV South Kalamb Central Transmission Utility (CTU) Substation. Tata Power's leadership in long-duration energy storage has been further solidified by the SECI's award.
