TikTok plans to build a second data centre in Finland within the next year with a budget of one billion euros ($1.16 billion). Therefore, it is remaining committed to its goal of storing customer data locally in Europe. This comes after parent firm ByteDance’s January achievement in avoiding a data security restriction in the US.

Meanwhile, European regulators are cracking down harder on social media sites over concerns about the safety of children and the development of addictive algorithms. The new facility in Lahti, southern Finland, will cost 1 billion euros, according to the short-form video company. The new venture's capacity will start at 50 MW and can be increased up to 128 MW if needed.

Finland Becoming a Centre Stage for Data Centres

In recent years, Finland's data infrastructure has grown to become world-class. Digital giants like Google and Microsoft have recently set up shop in the country in an effort to cut energy costs and improve environmental sustainability. With its chilly weather, cheap carbon-neutral electricity, and trustworthy, pro-business EU regulations, this country has a lot to offer. Reuters revealed in April that TikTok's initial foray into Finland caused political tension.

Legislators supposedly were not informed, even though the investment in 2024 had been approved by the defence ministry. A "reconsideration" of the initiative was already advocated by former Minister of Economic Affairs Wille Rydman. The Minister brought up concerns about national security and the company's regional plan, which he felt was not being made clear enough. "At the very least, I would hope that this property development company would reconsider once more whether it really wants TikTok as its tenant," Rydman told Finland's public radio Yle, about TikTok's local partner.

TikTok Assuring European Data Security

According to TikTok, their European data is currently stored in three different locations—Norway, Ireland, and the US—and is subject to stringent security protocols. The Lahti location is expected to be operational by 2027, and its main Finnish hub in Kouvola is expected to be finished later this year. The recent investment announcement was strongly supported by the mayor of Lahti.

A statement from Lahti Mayor Niko Kyynarainen stated that the investment is big in relation to Lahti. The signing of the major tenant agreement and the project's continued smooth progress have both satisfied Kyynarainen. A number of high-profile American executives have left TikTok in the last year, and the most recent of these is Khartoon Weiss, who is leading advertising on the platform.
