Vodafone Idea–Ericsson Deal Signals Major Capex Push for Telecom Upgrades
Ericsson, a Swedish producer of telecom network equipment, and Vodafone Idea, the third-largest carrier in India, have strengthened their collaboration. Together, the two will update the carrier's postpaid offerings and strengthen the telco's future networks. On 2 March, the businesses announced that Ericsson will launch cloud-native 'Ericsson Charging', which will help the company support and grow its postpaid subscriber segment while also delivering unique postpaid offers.
Increasing the number of its more lucrative postpaid customers is a primary goal for Vi. The carrier plans to extend its network coverage, deploy and integrate additional network sites, augment capacity, and expand coverage using Ericsson's equipment. This is all part of a broader INR 45,000-crore capital expenditure plan to deepen the network's coverage and reduce customer churn. The corporations remained tight-lipped about the partnership's finances.
Deal To Enhance Vi’s Network
Supporting Vi's continuous endeavours to extend 5G and 4G connectivity, the partnership's efforts will contribute to improved data capacity and enhanced indoor coverage. The press release from Ericsson, which announced the partnership's expansion, stated that the company has expanded its network in 10 circles.
Further, it has installed high-performance small-cell towers, upgraded existing sites, and added 5G and 4G sites since 2024. The press statement went on to say that Ericsson and Vodafone Idea have deepened their strategic cooperation so that the former can help the latter upgrade its postpaid services and continue expanding its network nationwide.
Ericsson Expands its Footprints in Vi’s Network
Through this deal, Ericsson will be able to serve both the prepaid and postpaid segments of Vi's subscriber base. As a result, the telecom equipment company is now a leading provider of online charging solutions for prepaid and postpaid consumers across India. According to the news release, Vi will also have access to several new Ericsson Telco IT AI apps as a result of the new collaboration.
Therefore, allowing it to have more say over its billing platform and guaranteeing that its subscribers will receive services that are dependable, efficient, and future-proof. Anomaly identification for billing apps, order fallout prediction, and other AI-powered features will be utilised by the telco. Additionally, Vi will improve service delivery through the use of capacity forecasting for the telecom cloud stack and intelligent usage monitoring for charging.
Customers will have an even better experience, and efficiency will be driven by these additions. With the new system, Vi will be able to roll out new services more quickly while also saving money and being more scalable. According to Vi, the upgrade would make their network more ready for 5G Standalone in the future while also improving operational efficiency and the consumer experience.
