Zee-JioStar Copyright Dispute Escalates as Zee Seeks Contempt Action
Zed Entertainment raises stakes in copyright fight with JioStar, moves contempt action in Delhi High Court Zed argues that JioStar continued to use its copyrighted music even after the May injunction banning the publishing, broadcasting, streaming and uploading of licensed compositions.
Two familiar firms are re-entering the courtroom. A case involving JioStar has been re-filed in the Delhi high court by Zee Entertainment. Citing the continued appearance of the Reliance-Disney giant's music on competing screens as further evidence of intentional defiance. Numerous news outlets publicised on September 25th that Zee's complaint from September 21st asserts JioStar's persistence in using copyrighted music and songs in their shows.
Despite a May injunction prohibiting the usage, publication, broadcasting, streaming, or uploading of Zee's licensed works, JioStar has persisted in doing so. Throughout the months of May and July, Zee highlights six separate incidents. A response from JioStar is sought by the court. December will mark the next hearing.
How JioStar & Zee Skirmish Started?
In April, the initial lawsuit was filed. After licence agreements ended, Zee wanted $3 million for fifty claims of violations. The leftover clips were referred to as residue and unintended by JioStar. It claimed to have cleared a substantial amount of material before the agreements expired. Zee still has its doubts. The most recent articles label the ongoing practice as exploitative and unlawful. This linguistic battle is embedded inside a broader legal dispute. Mukesh Ambani and Manoj Modi have been openly accused by Zee founder Subhash Chandra.
Both individuals are said to have propagated false information regarding the personal guarantees that Chandra provided for loans that were given to entities associated with the Essel business. According to Chandra, Reliance-affiliated media sites presented the National Company Law Tribunal case as though he had personally borrowed INR 22,006 crore and paid it off for about 6.5 crore rupees. Never the borrower, he maintained; he was merely a guarantor. Claims from lenders who were resisting were far smaller, he added. He singled out Ambani by name and demanded an end to the campaign, which he had associated with Manoj Modi and others.
Legal Tug of War Between ZEE and JioStar
Claim refuted by JioStar and the Reliance group. Defending their media brands against personal attacks is something they have always done; thus, they deemed the comments unjustified. Conflict between the two factions has already escalated to other fronts. Disputes have arisen between JioStar and Zee over the latter's alleged unlicensed airing of Bollywood films. Reliance is pursuing $1 billion in an ongoing London arbitration on a cricket deal that fell through. After Reliance and Disney merged their Indian media businesses in 2024 for $8.5 billion, the resulting company, JioStar, became the market leader.
With hundreds of millions of streaming users, this joint venture claimed 34.2% of the television market. With a catalogue of around 19,450 songs, Zee, one of the oldest broadcasters in India, accounts for over 18%. Once upon a time, there was a low-key transfer of content rights between executive offices. Eventually, they wind up in public films and hefty legal documents. Whether the music remains muted or turns up again will be revealed in December.
