Ashish was born in New Delhi, India, on 10th March 1969. He attended St. Xavier’s Collegiate School and completed his education at St. James School, Kolkata. Then, he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in applied mathematics and economics from Yale University. He then went on to complete his MBA from Harvard Business School.

Ashish initially worked on Wall Street from 1992 to 1993 at Wasserstein Perella & Co., a boutique investment bank. There, he was the only Indian analyst. Later, he moved to McCown DeLeeuw & Co, an 8-person private equity firm based out of California. He worked as the junior-most associate for them. 

After completing his MBA in 1997, Ashish went to work in the Risk Arbitrage Group at Goldman Sachs. But at 29 years of age, he decided to leave New York and return to India. 

In 1999, he founded ChrysCapital in Mumbai with his partner Raj Kondur, a classmate from Harvard Business School. His firm quickly became known for its diversified investment options, making him one of the top 10 investors in India

Ashish Dhawan - Philanthropy

In 2012, Ashish retired from his career as a private equity investor and founded the Central Square Foundation (CSF), a grant organization and policy think tank that focuses more on the transformation of the quality of school education in India. In 2014, he helped launch the Ashoka University, named as India’s first ‘Ivy-league-caliber’ liberal arts university. 

Some other organizations that Ashish launched include: 

  1. India Leaders for the Social Sector (ILSS) that he set up in 2017 with Anu Prasad.
  2. Air Pollution Action Group (APAG) in 2019. 
  3. Centre for Effective Governance of Indian States (CEGIS), in collaboration with Karthik Muralidharan.

During COVID-19, Ashish and CSF set up the ACT EdTech Ambition Fund, an organization that was dedicated to helping deliver education for underprivileged children. He and Manisha also set up the Convergence Foundation as an umbrella organization and grant-giving platform to help promote education in India.
