India's electric passenger vehicle market stayed above the 30,000-unit mark for a second consecutive month in July 2026. Retail sales stood at 32,609 units, up 83% year-on-year, as per Vahan portal data. This follows a record 33,307 units in June, meaning July's total was slightly lower on a month-on-month basis, though still comfortably ahead of every month before June.

Tata Motors Extends Its Lead

Tata Motors recorded its best-ever monthly retail sales of 13,578 units in July, up 102% year-on-year and 6% higher than June. This was the second straight month the company sold more than 12,000 units, after 12,756 units in June. The result pushed Tata past the 40% EV market share mark after a long gap. Cumulative sales between April and July reached 46,697 units, up 108% year-on-year. The Nexon EV remains its volume driver, while the updated Tiago EV and the Punch EV have brought in a large share of first-time EV buyers. The company also recently expanded its EV portfolio with the launch of the Sierra EV.

Mahindra Holds Second Place

Mahindra sold 7,677 electric SUVs in July, up 125% year-on-year, crossing the 7,000-unit mark for the second month running, though this was 498 units fewer than June. Its market share rose to 22%, up from 19% a year earlier. The BE 6 and XEV 9e continue to see strong demand, and the XEV 9S, Mahindra's first three-row born-electric SUV, has added further depth to its lineup.

JSW MG Motor, Maruti Suzuki and VinFast

JSW MG Motor India sold 5,642 units, down 4% year-on-year and 9% lower than June, taking its market share down to 16% from 33% a year ago. The Windsor EV remains its bestselling model.

Maruti Suzuki sold 1,590 units of the e Vitara, its fifth straight month of four-digit sales, though 20% lower than June, which remains the model's best month so far. Domestic sales have so far been limited by a larger share of production going to exports, a constraint expected to ease with a new fourth manufacturing line coming online at the company's Hansalpur, Gujarat plant.

VinFast India posted its highest-ever monthly sales with 1,478 units, edging past its previous best of 1,448 units in June, and giving it a 4% market share. According to SIAM wholesale data, the VF Limo Green, a commercial-use model, was its bestseller in Q1 FY2027, accounting for 46% of total sales.

The Rest of the Mainstream Segment

BYD sold 742 units, up 47% year-on-year, after raising prices by 1-2% on 1 July, its second hike of the year. Hyundai sold 565 units, down 21% year-on-year but up 51% from June, with its EV lineup limited to the Creta Electric and Ioniq 5. Kia sold 464 units, up 614% year-on-year off a low base, aided by the mass-market Carens Clavis EV. Toyota sold 123 units of the Urban Cruiser Ebella, a badge-engineered version of the e Vitara.

Luxury EVs Post Record Volumes

Luxury carmakers sold 699 EVs in July, up 60% year-on-year though 17% below June's record of 847 units. BMW led the segment with 367 units, a 52% segment share, followed by Mercedes-Benz with 163 units, up 42% year-on-year on the back of the CLA electric sedan launched in late April.

Tesla recorded its highest-ever monthly sales in India, crossing the 100-unit mark for the first time with 115 Model Ys sold, a 203% jump from June. This followed a Rs 9 lakh price cut on the Model Y, bringing its starting price down to Rs 50.89 lakh ex-showroom, which lifted its segment share from 4% to 16%. Volvo sold 48 units, Porsche sold 6, while Audi, Rolls-Royce and Jaguar Land Rover recorded no EV sales in India during the month.
