In anticipation of the approaching Christmas season, e-commerce giant Amazon announced on September 14th an extension of its operations network across India. This led to the establishment of 150 last-mile delivery stations, 20 fulfilment centres, and 6 sort centres. According to Amazon's statement, the expansion is a component of the company's previously announced investment of more than INR 2,800 crore to strengthen its infrastructure and operations across the country.

With this development, Amazon's overall storage capacity in India will reach 64 million cubic feet, an increase of 50% from its current level. Logistics companies hired by other parties will run and oversee the infrastructure. All six new sorting centres are located in Chikkaballapur, Hassan, Meerut, Ramanagar, Raipur, and Varanasi. Further, seven of the 20 new fulfilment centres are being constructed in non-metropolitan cities.

Amazon Getting all Set for Festive Season

The online retailer had previously announced the addition of more than 1.6 lakh seasonal jobs in 400 places, including both major cities and smaller towns. These jobs are created as Amazon is preparing for the expected increase in customer demand over the holiday season. Twelve cities—Bhojpur, Bokajan, Jalaun, Jehanabad, Namsai, Puruliya, Ribhoi, Senapati, Sivasagar, Udalguri, Ukhrul, and Wokha—would be home to the first-ever Amazon last-mile delivery station out of the one hundred and fifty that will be installed across 118 cities.

Abhinav Singh, Amazon's VP of operations for India, APAC, the Middle East, Turkey, and Africa, expressed his company's excitement about the new facilities' readiness to service customers throughout India ahead of the festive season. Tens of thousands of jobs will be created, and economic growth will be supported in communities around the nation as a result of these investments, which will also enable Amazon to respond to changing seller and customer needs, Singh added.

Amazon and Flipkart Revamp Seller Fees, Penalties

In the weeks preceding the holiday shopping season, e-commerce giants Flipkart and Amazon have adjusted their fee and penalty regimes for vendors on their sites. Many small and medium-sized businesses are already struggling to make ends meet, and this move will only make their financial situations worse, according to the sellers. Amazon India has announced on its seller forum that starting August 17, 2026, the way it determines the costs for merchants who use the Easy Ship and Self Ship services has changed.

Sellers participate in Easy Ship by keeping goods in stock, packing them upon receipt of an order, and then transferring them to the Easy Ship Pickup executive. Once the product is ready, the executive will send it and make sure it arrives on time. Without involving Amazon's operations, sellers engage in self-ship when they package and ship their own products through their own courier or delivery service. A percentage of the order value is now used to calculate the fee, which was previously based on referral charges specific to each category.
