Amazon Cuts More Jobs as Retail Division Faces Fresh Layoffs

Amazon has announced more job layoffs, with the most of the cuts apparently impacting its Stores segment with less than 1,000 white-collar staff across the US, India and UK said to be affected. The layoffs came after Prime Big Deal Days and a broader restructure of Amazon’s personnel.

Amazon cuts more jobs as retail division faces fresh layoffs

On October 7th, Amazon said that it has laid off a limited number of employees, mostly in the Stores division responsible for managing the company's flagship online store. The retail division layoffs occur on Prime Big Deal Days, one of Amazon's busiest shopping days of the year.

Discounts of varied sizes are available throughout the sale, which began on October 6 and continues through October 7. These layoffs follow a longer pattern of smaller cutbacks that started in January of last year and reached 30,000. A few impacted workers contacted a news agency and forwarded news posts from the company's Slack groups.

Why Amazon is opting for Layoffs?

The media has reported that fewer than 1,000 white-collar employees were laid off by Amazon. In an email statement, an Amazon representative explained that the company has reorganised certain of its retail operations. With this move, it hopes that this new organisational setup will allow it to more effectively carry out its strategic goals.

It appeared from the internal Slack channel that other departments inside stores were involved, including customer service, selling partner services, and maybe even other departments across Amazon. It was a global exercise, affecting workers in the United States, India, and the United Kingdom.

In an interview that aired on October 7th on Fox News, Jeff Bezos, founder and executive chairman of Amazon, indicated that the firm overhired during the pandemic, which is why more job cuts are necessary. It was a tremendously stressful time for the firm, he said, because customers were staying home and placing orders. He noted that in order to fulfil this high demand, Amazon had to hire extra manpower.
