Anthropic Names Ex-Microsoft Leader Irina Ghose as Head of India Operations
Anthropic, a prominent artificial intelligence company, has appointed Irina Ghose, former managing director of Microsoft India, as managing director to spearhead its Indian operations, reflecting its strategic expansion initiatives. According to a release, the hiring coincides with Claude's parent company preparing to launch its first office in India in Bengaluru. Ghose will spearhead enterprise transformation and grow Anthropic's technology business in the nation.
During her appointment, Ghose stated that Indian organisations are transitioning from experimentation to applied AI, where long-term effect, safety, and trust are just as important as innovation. My idea that technology should empower people, provide access, and produce long-lasting value across India's many languages and communities is in line with Anthropic's objective. How this will transform Anthropic’s operations lets find out?
What Ghose Brings to Anthropic’s Table?
She has over thirty years of expertise creating and growing technology companies. She finished her 24-year career in Microsoft India before joining Anthropic. She became the MD of Microsoft's India division after joining the tech giant in 2001 as a regional partner alliance manager and receiving several promotions. Speaking about Anthropic's future prospects, Ghose stated that AI that is customised to local languages will be a force multiplier throughout society and that India has become the second-largest user base for Claude.ai.
Additionally, Anthropic stated that in order to improve relationships with regional groups, its staff will collaborate closely with academic institutions and legislators. Anthropic was reportedly considering a collaboration with Reliance Industries to expand its footprint in India in October of last year. Later that week, Dario Amodei, the CEO and cofounder of the California-based business, met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi to talk about the company's goals for growth and the use of AI in the nation.
Changing Dynamics of AI in India
Notably, India is Anthropic's second-largest market after the US, with a 21.6% share, with 7.2% of the world's Claude usage. This coincides with India's growing acceptance of AI and its emergence as a major market for AI companies. To take advantage of this opportunity, international AI giants like OpenAI and Perplexity are also concentrating on the Indian market.
In order to establish AI infrastructure in India, TCS and OpenAI are also in advanced talks. The company, which is led by Sam Altman, is seeking to collaborate with Indian educational institutions. Additionally, last year it introduced ChatGPT Go in India for INR 399 per month. Google is giving Indian students free access to its Gemini Pro subscription, while Perplexity has partnered with Airtel to broaden its product offerings. Under the Center's IndiaAI Mission, Indian startups such as Soket AI, SarvamAI, and Gnani.ai are also creating native AI models.
