Apple AI Leadership Change: John Giannandrea to Exit Role After Leading Apple Intelligence
Almost eight years after joining Apple, John Giannandrea is likely to depart as head of artificial intelligence. In keeping with the vesting of stock options associated with his initial employment agreement, his departure is anticipated to occur around April 15. In 2018, Apple hired Giannandrea to bolster its machine learning and associated technology skills.
Giannandrea had previously overseen search and AI at Google. The scope of Giannandrea's work at Apple has been shrinking over the past few years. Mike Rockwell, who now serves software head Craig Federighi, was given control of Siri in March 2025. As a result, Apple's leadership structure in artificial intelligence and software underwent a change.
Giannandrea’s on the Job Performance
Once this change was complete, Giannandrea transitioned into an advisory capacity. Under his previous leadership, important executives like Federighi, Eddy Cue, and Sabih Khan were reassigned key domains, including testing and AI models. His diminished role hinted at a more systemic reorganisation of Apple's AI approach. The changeover has been slow, but Apple hasn't spoken much about his departure.
His continuous contributions during the period of his restricted advisory post, which he has held since late 2025, remain unclear. Giannandrea was an integral part of the team that shaped Apple's AI strategy and machine learning framework when he was there. Despite the cancellation of several high-profile projects, including the Apple Car, his work laid the groundwork for the systems that underpin Apple's artificial intelligence efforts to this day. His tenure at Apple is reflective of a time of upheaval, when the firm restructured leadership roles across departments and increased its emphasis on artificial intelligence.
Apple Actively Looking to Retain Talent
To keep talented employees around for the long haul, Apple has wisely designed a bonus structure. Bonuses were distributed in the form of restricted stock units, which will vest over a period of four years. Employees can only reap the benefits if they stay put at Apple. While the exact amount will be determined by Apple's stock performance, most packages fall within the $200,000 to $400,000 range.
The loss of talented engineers to competitors is a growing issue for Apple's upper management. A new competitor has arisen: OpenAI. They've recruited Jony Ive, who was Apple's head of design, to assist in creating an AI-centric line of goods. Tang Tan, an Apple veteran, is a part of OpenAI's hardware business and was the head of the iPhone product design team that is now collecting bonuses. Several hundred former Apple engineers, including those who worked on the iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, and Vision Pro, have joined Tan's team at OpenAI.
