Flipkart Plans ‘Flipkart for Earth’ Initiative, Targets Growing Demand for Sustainable Products
Flipkart is preparing to introduce ‘Flipkart for Earth’, a curated program of premium, healthier, toxin-free and sustainable products spanning categories including food, apparel, home and technology. The move comes amid rising demand for specialised services in India’s rapid commerce market.
Flipkart has started partnering with businesses in a variety of industries, including food and drink, home furnishings, apparel, and electronics. The suggested offering is said to center on healthier, toxin-free, and environmentally friendly products, according to media reports.
It is not yet known if Flipkart for Earth would only be accessible on the company's e-commerce site or if it will also be available on Flipkart Minutes, its rapid commerce service. Swiggy Instamart's Switch is a curated marketplace that has products across more than 60 categories. If Minutes were to expand, it may compete with Switch.
Flipkart Aims to Join New Wave in India’s Qcomm Sector
This shift is in response to the increasing focus on premium and specialised product categories through quick commerce platforms. This market has also benefited from the addition of FirstClub, which specialises in high-quality agricultural and grocery items. Pykd, a private label of gourmet nibbles, was introduced in August by Flipkart Minutes. In a category seeing rapid growth in quick commerce, the move gives the corporation greater control over product sourcing, price, and margins.
Rival companies, such as Amazon, Swiggy, Zepto, Instamart, and Blinkit present gourmet product options as well. People are prepared to spend a premium for things they believe would improve their health; thus, these categories are the ones the platforms are focusing on. Platforms can further distinguish their offers through exclusive brand collaborations. Swiggy Instamart's Switch offering mirrors the premium-product drive as well. Swiggy reported that over 20% of their orders included products listed on Switch during their second quarter earnings call. Now, there are more than 60 different categories available.
Flipkart Focussing on Local Sourcing
Through its local sourcing partners, Flipkart aims to link organised retail demand with farmers. The strategy is exemplified by its collaboration with Agromol Ventures, an organisation that assists farmers in the Pune area. Before sending the goods to Minutes' fulfilment centres, Agromol gathers them from surrounding villages, sorts, grades, checks for quality, and packs them. Storage rooms at each of its six Maharashtra locations are climate-controlled and kept at a temperature between 2 and 10 degrees Celsius.
As per media reports, Flipkart currently has approximately 37 exclusive collection centres nationwide. Although it will make investments in other facilities as needed, achieving exclusivity is not its top aim. Our partners help farmers better understand market demand, including the amount and size of vegetables needed, by sharing demand predictions and planning requirements. The head of Flipkart Minutes and senior vice president of Flipkart, Kunal Gupta, told a media source that they can pull this off even without exclusive partners.
At the collection and fulfilment centres, vegetables are inspected for size, colour, and freshness. Any items that don't match these standards are rejected. According to him, Flipkart strives to receive its produce as soon as it is picked. Farmers, according to the idea, should stop focusing on crop production and start responding to consumer demand for their goods.
