Indian-Origin Billionaire Vinod Khosla Agrees to Buy Seattle Seahawks in Record $9.6 Billion NFL Deal
Indian-origin billionaire and venture capitalist Vinod Khosla has agreed to acquire the Seattle Seahawks in a deal valued at $9.6 billion, making it the most expensive sale of an NFL franchise to date. The agreement was announced by the estate of late Microsoft co-founder Paul G. Allen, which has owned the team since Allen's death in 2018. The transaction is still subject to approval from NFL team owners.
The acquisition marks a historic milestone for Khosla, the Pune-born entrepreneur who co-founded Sun Microsystems and later established Khosla Ventures, one of Silicon Valley's leading venture capital firms. If approved, the deal will surpass the previous NFL franchise sale record and place Khosla among the league's most prominent owners.
Record-Breaking Deal Awaits NFL Approval
The Seattle Seahawks announced that the Paul G. Allen Estate has entered into a formal sale agreement with an ownership group led by the Khosla family. The group includes Vinod Khosla, his wife Neeru Khosla, and their son Neal Khosla. Under NFL rules, the transaction must receive approval from at least 24 of the league's 32 owners before it can be completed.
Reports also indicate that Neeru Khosla is expected to serve as the controlling owner of the franchise, in line with NFL ownership requirements. Vinod Khosla currently owns a minority stake in the San Francisco 49ers, which he acquired in 2025. That investment is expected to be addressed as part of the league's ownership approval process.
The Seahawks were put up for sale following instructions left by Paul Allen before his death. His sister, Jody Allen, has overseen the franchise through the estate since 2018.
Who Is Vinod Khosla?
Vinod Khosla was born in Pune and graduated from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi before pursuing higher studies in the United States. In 1982, he co-founded Sun Microsystems, which became one of the pioneering companies of the Internet era.
He later founded Khosla Ventures in 2004, investing in sectors such as artificial intelligence, healthcare, clean energy and enterprise technology. Over the years, the firm has backed several successful startups, including Stripe, DoorDash, Instacart and OpenAI.
A Landmark Moment for the NFL
The $9.6 billion agreement highlights the growing value of major sports franchises, particularly in the NFL, which remains the world's most valuable professional sports league by team valuations. The Seahawks, based in Seattle, won their first Super Bowl in the 2013 season and have remained one of the league's strongest commercial franchises.
If the sale receives the required approvals, it will not only set a new benchmark for sports franchise valuations but also mark another significant milestone for an Indian-origin entrepreneur on the global business stage.
