IndiGo Signs Record 1,000+ LEAP-1A Engine Order with CFM at Farnborough Airshow
IndiGo has placed a groundbreaking order for more than 1,000 CFM LEAP-1A engines to power 510 Airbus A320neo-family aircraft, which is the largest engine order in the history of CFM International.
In addition to fresh engine selections from aircraft lessors Jackson Square Aviation (JSA) and SMBC Aviation Capital, CFM International (CFM) has received a record order for over 1,000 LEAP-1A engines from IndiGo.
The 510 Airbus A320neo-family aircraft will be powered by the memorandum of understanding with IndiGo. In addition to being the largest order in CFM's history, it is also the largest order ever placed for LEAP engines. During the Farnborough Airshow, the parties announced the arrangement. Long maintenance wait times and spare part shortages have plagued the engine industry for years, causing many airlines to temporarily idle their flights.
Specifications of CFM and IndiGo’s Agreement
The agreement also covers the long-term support for IndiGo's fleet expansion, including material services, spare parts, and assistance in establishing the engine maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facility as planned by the airline. The company is pleased to extend its long-standing cooperation with CFM International, according to IndiGo CEO-designate Willie Walsh, as IndiGo begins its next chapter of growth towards becoming a truly global airline.
He said that the airline's goals of quick growth, operational resilience, and sustainability will be aided by the LEAP engine's established dependability. Two separate deals were finalised: one by SMBC Aviation Capital, which ordered 35 Airbus A320neo-family aircraft, and another by Jackson Square Aviation, which used its previously announced Airbus order to power LEAP-1A engines. In response to the increasing demand for air travel around the world, airlines and lessors are investing in next-generation fleets that are more fuel-efficient. These announcements further solidify CFM's position in the single-aisle aircraft market.
IndiGo’s Strong Bond with CFM
For ten years, IndiGo and CFM have been partners. In 2019, the airline expanded its collaboration by selecting LEAP-1A engines for its Airbus A320neo and A321neo fleet, adding to its original operation of Airbus A320ceo Family aircraft powered by CFM56-5B engines. According to H. Lawrence Culp Jr, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of GE Aerospace, IndiGo has relied on CFM to bolster its performance for one decade. In addition, Culp added that it is an honour for CFM to renew that trust with today's agreement.
While maintaining fuel efficiency and dependability, LEAP engines are delivering up to double the time on wing in hot and demanding operating circumstances compared to when they were first introduced to service. The arrangement, according to Olivier Andriès, Safran's CEO, represents the continuation of the firms' long-standing cooperation. In addition, this further proves Safran's resolve to increase manufacturing and maintenance of LEAP engines in India. Last year, the business opened its biggest maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facility for LEAP engines. At full capacity, the plant can handle up to 300 engine shop visits each year.
