Instamart Eyes Wider Battery-Swapping Network to Boost EV Deliveries

In an effort to increase the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) in last-mile delivery, Instamart announced on September 23 that it intended to fortify its battery-swapping station platform. The firm aims to enhance its network by constructing facilities in close proximity to its micro-fulfilment centers or dark stations.

According to the business, this project is in line with its collaborations with Yuma Energy, a platform for battery swapping, and Yulu, an operator of electric mobility-as-a-service (MaaS) platforms. Access to affordable electric two-wheelers and charging-related downtime are two practical challenges to EV adoption that this new alliance wants to address. By making room in its PODs (dark stores) for Yuma's swapping stations, Instamart is collaborating with Yuma Energy to move battery-swapping infrastructure closer to delivery partners, according to the firm.

Instamart Giving More Power to its Delivery Partners

The business stated that delivery partners that travel an average of 90 km or more per day may need to replace their batteries twice a day. The firm also mentioned that placing the swapping stations closer to PODs can reduce travel and waiting time by up to 60 minutes each day. According to Instamart's VP of driver and delivery operations, Anant Choudhary, the next step in the widespread use of electric vehicles will be to figure out how to make electric mobility practical for last-mile deliveries.

Increasing vehicle accessibility, decreasing operational expenses, and minimising charging downtime are all part of this plan. According to Choudhary, Instamart is working with Yuma Energy and Yulu to address these real-world issues. Earlier this month, the Instamart POD (Dark) shop in Bengaluru opened the first battery-swapping station. Hence, bringing energy access closer to the areas where delivery partners operate, according to Instamart. Currently, Yuma Energy runs over 2,000 battery-swapping machines, and each swap takes less than two minutes.

Instamart Enhancing its EV Infra Via Collaborations

Instamart and Yulu have announced a partnership in which Instamart will reimburse delivery partners for the cost of renting Yulu electric two-wheelers for in-app purchases. Reducing delivery partners' susceptibility to fluctuating petrol costs and lowering the upfront cost of switching to an EV are the stated goals of the programme. The program has cut leasing costs for participating delivery partners by up to 30% and has incentivised thousands of partners since its inception in May of this year.

Instamart asserted that this would make electric vehicles a more cost-effective choice for last-mile deliveries. Swiggy and Instamart have partnered with fifty or more electric vehicle (EV) companies around India to increase delivery partners' access to EVs. The firm's announcement highlights its relationships with Yulu and Yuma Energy. These partnerships enhance the ecosystem by bringing together affordable vehicles, convenient energy infrastructure, and easy access for delivery fleet members to continue using EVs.
